2000 v40 valve cover gasket

Post by ksanthony »

I have a 2000 v40 that I just had the timing belt replaced on. Since that time I have had a slight oil leak from the right side of the engine...I think. The mechanic that did the timing belt tells me the oil leak is not associated with the timing belt change and that it appears to be leaking from the valve cover gasket. From what I read one forum post that a leak from the valve cover is not very likely. Has anyone had a similar situation occur? How involved is replacing the valve cover gasket/sealant?

Replacing the cam cover is labor intensive and requires special tools only a dedicated Volvo shop will have. I have seen whole engines that were turned to junk by the wrong person working on them. When you say right side of the engine do you mean the passenger side? The exhaust camshaft hubs usually start to leak at the same time the timing belt is due. Is the timing belt getting wet? Is the check engine light on? There are a few different places oil will leak. Some are simple/cheap and some are costly. I dont know who did your timing belt but it is not likely it is coming from the cam cover unless it is running off the top and down. These s/v 40s can become expensive little cars at 100k miles or more. That is a professional opinion but I would rather have an informed happy customer than one who burns the Swedish flag in effigy. That is why I dont sell cars.

Thank you for your reply.

If I'm not mistaken, it is leaking from the passenger side. I do not know if the timing belt was, or is wet, and the check engine light is not on.
