Hello everyone,
My first post on here. I am a new owner of a well used 1988 240DL wagon. I am an avid diy person and am working my way through the list of repairs with much help from this forum. The car was neglected by the previous owner then parked for six months.
I have had trouble finding info or pictures regarding the latch assembly in the tailgate. The outside lever seems to be disconnected from the inside lever. Neither one activates the latch that holds the door closed. I can manually move the latch. I assume some pieces have fallen off. Can someone direct me to a parts diagram?
Thanks
tailgate latch not functioning

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The first attachment is from VADIS and covers the whole tailgate. The second attachment is from Haynes and may be easier to follow. Bill.

As part #44 doesn't have a Volvo part number I doubt if you will be able to buy it online. However, our sponsor Erie Vo-Vo does stock used parts and I understand they are very helpful in finding obscure bits. Their link is at the top of the forum. Apparently they respond better to a phone call than to email.

This post is Three years old now but any luck?
I got a similar problem. Found it was #20, the "link" that was broken.
Just got home from the junk yard. They wont sell me the latch without the rest of the tailgate.
I'm looking for any solution.
Thanks MM

Hey MM,
I have yet to fix mine, just dealt with it. I have been focusing my energy (money) on other things. A few years ago I did quite a bit of looking around for the latch mechanism parts and they were either non existent or cost prohibitive. The link could probably be made from some thin gauge rod assuming you have the broken part to match. I've had better luck with junk yards further out from the city-just make a trip out of it.
