2006 V50 Engine noise and P0171 code

I have a 2006 V50 with about 46K miles. Recently I started to notice some noise from the engine compartment that reminded me of a power steering pump when the fluid level is low. Topped off the fluid but it didn't help.

Noise gradually got louder and one day the Check engine light came on. Code was a P0171.

I went through my paperwork for the car and noticed a Volvo extended warranty notice regarding "Crankcase Oil Trap and Ventilation hose" dated January of 2009. Symptoms are check engine light and possible noise from the engine.

I headed over to the Volvo dealer and demonstrated the noise and mentioned the ventilation hose. The service manager pulled the oil dip stick and noise ceased immediately. He said that indeed was the problem. The bottom line: Volvo made the repair and parts replacement for no charge.
