PVC and Rear Main Seal

Post by remark90 »

OK, so I replaced the PVC/Flame trap on my 95 850 about 5,000 mi. ago with lots of help from this forum. Last week started seeing oil on the driveway. :-( After some checking it seems to be coming from the the rear seal and once again I have oil vapor coming from the dipstick. Shit Hell! What should I be checking for to fix the PVC/Flame tram issue first, with a long shot it letting the rear seal do the job its supposed to do?

Thanks for any words of wisdom anyone can give, Kent.

Hard to say but I did the PCV on my son's '94 850 non-turbo and still the gusher from the dipstick. I'm about convinced that it's in the oil pan- a hard right turn for the oil coming in from above, via the pcv breather box. I've heard the only real way to remedy this is to take the oil pan off and go from below. Any one concur, or have other opinions on this?

I too have the plume of smoke but no leak yet, and am hoping the Seafoam through the vacuum system purge gets lucky. Wonder if that could help you guys...

When I replaced the PVC/Flame trap I did use "Seafoam". :-)

Check your back camshaft seals they usually fail before rms and oil drip down around rms area.
Good luck.

I would check the camshaft seals. The one behind the distributor is particularly difficult to detect, and looks like a rms leak. There is a how to on here somewhere.

OK, I will check the cam seals, does anyone have an idea what I need to do to fix the PVC/Flame trap issue? Keep in mind its only 5000 mi old. BTW I purchased it from IPD.

2 questions for you:

-Did you clean the two ports into the crankcase from the bottom of the oil separator box?
-Are the tubes on top of the box correctly routed? Some of the diagrams floating around out there are WRONG. I showed the correct routing in my repair write-up.

Just checking in, haven't driven the car so haven't had a chance to check the cam seals yet. I hopefully will have a chance towards the end of the month. Have a wonderful Holiday everyone.
