Thank you "mom" for the wonderful DIY!
I already changed the Ignition Switch (the electrical portion on the Left side of the Steering Column).
In 5-10% of the time, I cannot go from "Position II" to "Position III (to crank)".
Talked to local Volvo tech with 30 years of experience, he says the Tumbler Unit needs to be replaced.
So here are my questions for the pro (or anyone):
1. My year is 1998 V70, this DIY is for 2000 model. Is it the same procedure for 1998?
2. Does the steering wheel needs to come out or not?
3. Volvo PN is 8626325 and local dealer wants US $300!
Anyone knows of a cheaper source?
Thanks in advance!
PS: Since "mom" is from Montreal, I used to live in Montreal in the 1990s....

Give Jamie at Waltrip Volvo a call and mention the Volvo forum. I got a price last year when I thought I would need to do mine and I'm sure it was much lower. They will sell/ship Volvo parts for far less than your typical dealer.
I don't think you could really do this without removing the wheel and airbag, so be sure to follow the proper sequence when reconnecting the battery to avoid setting the SRS warning and a trip to the dealer to clear it.

I read this DIY and it says 1999 and up:
http://volvospeed.com/Repair/ignition_S80.html
Since I have a 1998 V70, can someone confirm for me the procedure is the same?
Does anyone have VADIS here?

Great write up and thanks!
What I did was find another salvage car and used the ignition lock from there with matching keys.
I also replaced the door handle key slot with the part from the same donour so it would match the new key.
Hopefully the v70 will not fail again for a few years.

Hello guys,
Just wanna warn you my english is not good, but i hope some of you could understand me.
The problem with my Volvo S70-1997 is the same just the key turns over and over.
I think the same part is broken as the pics up shows the problem. So, what my friend made is, he opened a hole
with the drill on the plate and added a pin in it, that it can stay stoped.I drove like this over 1 year, but yesterday it happend again.
As i saw the pics below the only way to take out the cylinder from main body is to cut out your way.
I think that it smells brand new, but the main problem is that my chip reader recognise only this key.
Any suggestion what should i do,because it cost tooo much.I am living in germany and here the prises are OMG.
If there is another way to take out the cylinder of the main body please let me know.
Regards

If you are tight on budget then:
- Remove the Upper and Lower Plastic Covers using the Torx screw driver (x2). Disconnect the electrical connector first.
- Remove the Ignition Switch on the LEFT side of the steering column (2 Torx bolts).
Then re-attach it to the electrical connector to the Ignition Switch and hang it with a wire or something.
- Keep a small screw driver in the car.
Whenever you need to start the engine:
- Insert Key and turn it to "II" and stop.
- Now use the small screw driver and turn the Ignition Switch to "III", the engine will run.
It is kind of a "bootleg" way to start the car but this should work.
Re: PN 8626325, how much do they charge you in Germany?
