how to replace your Volvo Ignition Lock Cylinder.

Upon investigation of his no-start condition on his 2000 S70, “mom” found that it was his ignition switch/ lock cylinder. In this thread you will find his pictures and a link to a good write-up on how to do the replacement. Glad you got your car running again, mom!
Today I decided to find what was the problem with my cylinder lock. I thought maybe I could repair it, but it is impossible. The broken part is made of cast aluminum and is very small. This part is a kind of “guillotine” that slides up and down inside the mechanism. Mine was missing a guide pin, preventing it to move freely.
The cause is definitely the steering wheel being turned to the left, forcing the steering lock from the right, and also the guillotine on its most vulnerable position. I’m sure it could happen on a brand new lock. Look at those pictures and you’ll understand.

I already changed the Ignition Switch (the electrical portion on the Left side of the Steering Column).
In 5-10% of the time, I cannot go from “Position II” to “Position III (to crank)”.
Talked to local Volvo tech with 30 years of experience, he says the Tumbler Unit needs to be replaced.
So here are my questions for the pro (or anyone):
1. My year is 1998 V70, this DIY is for 2000 model. Is it the same procedure for 1998?
2. Does the steering wheel needs to come out or not?
3. Volvo PN is 8626325 and local dealer wants US $300!
Anyone knows of a cheaper source?

What I did was find another salvage car and used the ignition lock from there with matching keys.
I also replaced the door handle key slot with the part from the same donour so it would match the new key.
Hopefully the V70 will not fail again for a few years.
