The connector for that gearbox can be harmed by battery acid intrusion. The connector sits almost directly under the end of the plastic battery tray. You might remove air cleaner, battery, and batt tray and give the connector a look. black plastic finger gets depressed and then the steel handle is flipped up and over and the connector pushes itself apart.

I'm having a similar problem. My car locks up on 3rd gear then I turn engine off and restart and works fine for while.
I went to autozone and got these codes P1618, Po751, and P1175 after getting the "Transmission Service Urgent" warning on the dash board. I would like to change all the solenoids that are accessible. The transmission will lockup on Park if is down hill and I can only engage it to gear if I push the car to the opposite direction, I guess is another solenoid.
Do you have any instructions on how to do this job on my 1999 s80 T6???

Thank you very much.

Apparently swapping the solenoid on the S70 transmission is a major headache. After a fluid change still no luck.

found a low milage replacement transmission on ebay for $400 shipped. Having it sent to my mechanic's shop. said he'd swap it out for $500.

HELLO,

I just purchased a 99 S80 T6 yesterday. Its a sweet ride!

The dash is responding with the same issue ..."P0751 my OBD2 reader says the shift solenoid is stuck open"
I want to replace the solenoids myself and have worked on cars in the past but never a volvo.

The dealership said there are 4 solenoids.
They also said they have to open the transmission up to get to them....but here it says the gearbox.
They say the repair is around $800!!!

1. How many solenoids did you/should I replace total?
2. Did you have to follow the VADIS PDF instructions exactly or is there an easier process?

THX everyone

Does anyone knows if a special tool is required to lower the engine/transmission to remove the cover ? I purchased all 5 solenoids on ebay and I'm trying to do the work myself..

i am on my first day of replacing the shift solenoid on my 2000 s80 non turbo. what a pain it is. I do consider my self a mechanic as i have done frame off restorations on two 69 camaros, a 68 camaro and a 67 chevelle. I even replaced the motor on my old 1997 850 GLT. I really dont want to pay my local mechanic the $1200.00 that he quoted me. and that was supposed to be with a discount.

I have to say that this is not for the faint of heart. though you do not need specialty tools, you will need a decent set and not just craftsman $100.00 set. you will need some tools that have been in the corner of your tool box that you havent used for years like a u joint or different lengths of extensions. or even better, a IR 7HP dual stage air compressor. anyway, this project is a challenge and you need to have patience and time to do this. If this is your only form of transportation, i suggest you put it in a shop and pay the bill. my s80 has been sitting for about 6 months waiting for me to start working on it and today was the day. I am 43 years old and i am not having fun doing this.

I have run into a couple speed bumps on the way. i have spent 6 hours on it and hopefully, i can finish the solenoid tomorrow. but i will need to wait for other parts such as the left control arm and a front hub. just things that i found that need replacing while working on the car.

I read the directions that was posted in a link in the first page. Then I dove right into it by removing parts. There were a couple of things that I was unclear with in the instructions but once i removed something, then I realized what the instructions were trying to say. I think i did skip some things in the instructions and i think that it add to my headache. I am at the point where i have lowered the motor but the cover can not come off. I still need about 2 more inches until it will be clear for removal. I guess i have to review the instructions again because im sure i missed a couple of steps causing me to not be able to remove the cover.

part of the instructions say to syphon the oil through the tube. It is alot easier and quicker to just remove the tranny pan though a bit messier. another thing i ran into was the bolt that held the steering joint to the shaft. You will need to fully remove the bolt as the shaft has an indent that keeps the u joing and shaft together. I thought all i need to do was loosen it and spread the u joint but i was still stuck and after 30 minutes, i decided to remove the bolt all together and the u joint finally came off. I am still trying to figure out what a collision protection system so i can remove it. I just hope i dont break anything that might make things worse.

Good luck.

the second day and car is together and on the road again. I have to say, the assembly process was alot easier and more gratifying than taking it apart. The begining of the day, i started by completely unbolting the sub frame and resting it on jack stands. you will need at least for jack stands or blocks so you can rest the subframe on them. once i got the front cover off, it was a fairly simple process to put the two solenoids in. i then put everything back together in reverse order and it went fairly quickly. I refilled the tranny with 6 quarts of tranny fluid, checked for leaks and went for a drive.

It felt good driving it around with no weird noises, no leaks, and smooth shifting. I was pleased and thought that i might be able to drive my s80 for years to come. Well, the joy had ended when i got the urgent transmission service message again. I had my obd11 reader and it gave me the same codes. p1618 and p0751. i cleared it hoping that it would fix it but the codes eventually popped up again. so, after all that work, my problems are still the same. time to sell the car.

hopefully, i was able to help some people by writing this. I was just unable to find alot of information regarding the tranny codes.

btw, i want to add that you can do this on a weekend, so from what i mentioned in my other post, if you have a two day weekend to work on your car, you can achieve removing and replacing the solenoids.

again,
good luck
