2000 S70 Immobilizer

Dealer wants $1,100 to replace this. Seems a bit high. Car starts and dies. Code says Immobilizer. I could swear someone was on the forum saying something about a sensor at the key slot. Anything?

The problem can be many things but one of the most common is the antenna ring that goes around the ignition key lock cylinder.
The first thing to do is to unplug it and spray some contact cleaner or WD-40 into the connector and then plug it in and unplug it a few times to clean any oxidation off the connections. The signal is a very low amplitude and very fain corrosion will block signals. Sometimes the antenna ring can be faulty but many get replaced the problem is gone only because new part has clean terminals. The antenna ring is a winding of wire and there is nothing to wear out. The steering column trim covers come off and the antenna ring is there in the open then.

Might sound weird and basic but I had the same problem in my 2000 S70 GLT SE, and replaced my fuel filter and haven't had any problems since. (A few weeks) Turns out the original fuel filter was still on the car, full of gunk, thirteen years later.

+1 on the antenna ring. This is a very common problem with 1999-2000 models and a very easy/cheap fix.

Stay away from that dealer.
