What Transmission fluid shall I use?

Post by AP »

I'm driving a 2000 S70 GLT and plan to change my transmission fluid. Heard some rumours saying you can't use regular Dextron III in my ATF. Does my transmission need the very expensive Mobil type 3309 fluid ?

Is your's a 4 speed or a 5 speed? Even if automatic there is a difference. Right under the "D" in the center console, is there a 3 or a 4? If there is a 4, the "D" is the 5th gear (well, sort of, but your's is a 5 speed). If under the "D" the first number you see is a 3, then you have a 4 speed. With a 4 speed you can use regular Dextron II/III (whatever your manual calls for). If a 5 speed then you need the special stuff, some are calling the 3309 (and your manual will say to use ONLY Volvo ATF). I researched this and posted quite a bit about it over on Swedespeed.com so if you want to go take a look and do a search for 3309 it will be interesting to you. Truth is, Mobil Oil company (Mobil-1) makes a 3309 ATF but it's not synthetic. Volvo also makes a "special" ATF that is 3309 compatible but it IS synthetic. If I needed the 3309 compatible ATF I wouldn't "downgrade" to Mobil-1, even though it is expensive, I would buy the Volvo brand and do the full 12-13 quart flush when I change it out. It's still cheap insurance at once every 2-3 years.

Thank you that was very helpful information. I got a 4 speed so I guess I can stick to the regular fluid. Does anyone know if the "Slick 50" trearment does any good to an ATF?

Stay away from the "Sick 50" and any other additives. The Volvo manual specifically states this. If you have some engine leaks, the only one I've seen that people swear by is AutoRX and I'm even leary of that one too, to be honest. Do a google search on that if you want. Or go to http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ and look in the forum section (you may have to sign up to get in) and you'll see all the people ranting and raving about oils and treatments of all types. Just use Mobil-1 or any other good full synthetic and you'll be doing your engine a world of good.

My 1995 850 still has the origional auto transmission oil in it. I added Slick 50 at 40,000km and to this time the transmission is about the only part of the car that I cant fault!! It is my intention to change the oil at the next service. I am not a great fan of additives but feel that this one is worth a try in some places.
