If worse comes to worst you can always use one of these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLX-31147/
ive used several on some older muscle cars and they work flawlessly and are adjustable just follow the instructions and wire an inline fuse, on the Volvo you may need to make a small hole in the fan shroud for the probe to go through and into the rad fins. However factory stuff is usually the best to stay with so id start with testing that fan according to Ozark Lee's instructions besides you want to make sure the fan is not the problem first.

hey guys I just looked around for lose wires, turns out I did not reconnect a black ground wire. (remember I changed the engine) the wire has a round connecter and I found a bolt on the block that was doing nothing so I bolted the wire down. could this have been my problem,,, my fan was not grounded. I will take it for a test drive tomorrow.
