Ratling noise in suspension

Post by Old Blue 66 »

I changed out the struts, strut mounts, new tires and had the front end aligned. Now Im getting some sort of rattle over bumps. Obvious suspension issue but where??

Someone mentioned to me that sway bar bushings are a common place of wear. Right or wrong?

Yea Paul, sway bar endlinks are probably the most common although I had the same problem after putting all new parts(struts, spring seats, endlinks, tie rod ends, brakes, rotors and new calipers) in my 98 S-70 T-5 (104K) and I'm still getting a rattling from the PS side, someone has suggested that my front motor mount is toast (right passenger side) so after exhausting all other options I'm going that route today.(see my post)

Good Luck

Does it should like a pinging noise?

Its just a rattle when you go over bumps.

The upper engine mount is a common point of failure on this engine as well.

It is also possible that your belly pan was not fully reattached... but it sounds like an engine mount is toast or a swaybar link needs to be replaced. Swaybar links are a very common culprit in Volvo suspension noise. The sound could be described as a "knocking" in the front end over bumps.

Yes, mine too. Mine is definitely the control arm bushing found simply by jacking it up and moving the wheel back and forth by grabbing it at 9 and 3 oclock. How important is an alignment after the control arm change? I shouldn't ask because the last time I replaced a tie rod end, I measured and counted and measured some more and still went through a pair of tires in short order.
