I just did this today. I'm new to soldering and all the great info on here gave me the confidence to give it a try. Got it all back together and took the car for a quick drive, and everything is working perfectly. Thank you everyone for the great information and all the good pictures.

OK. This thread was very helpful to me. I was getting the intermittent brake/abs light with no speedo and dashes in the odo. So it clearly led me to resolder ABS module which I did last week. Thought I did good because no lights on 5 hour ride back "home" (I work 5 away and live there during the week). My wife said on Sat that the ABS light came on once but went back off. Today (Sun) I drove it back up to DC and got the same symptoms along the way. Maybe I need to try to resolder again. But in addition, while having these intermittent lights tonight, I also got a flashing UPSHIFT light. DAMN! Don't know if they are related. Car is driving great, tranny fluid is fine, brakes are great, just the damn lights. Oh yeah, I also get intermittent ETS light, but I think that's unrelated. And the CEL has been on for awhile for rich bank 2 or something. Again, I think unrelated. So at one point tonight I had ABS, BRAKE, ETS, FLASHING UP, CHECK ENGINE, NO SPEEDO, NO ODO all at once. Very colorful! Currently, ETS, CHECK ENGINE, FLASHING UP. I'm going to try to resolder ABS Module again this week. My OBDII reader arrives at home this week, so I'll check codes on Friday (but it won't check brake module or transmission codes). Any ideas? This site has led me to more successful repairs than I would have thought possible, so I trust the judgement of many of you. Let me know if you think the flashing upshift could simply be the result of shifting while the speedo/odo was dead. Thanks!

Last week i sold my belowed 245 and bought a 1996 850GLE right away. This is my first attempt on such an 'electronic' car. Read through 21 pages of comments and great tips and felt inspired to do the job yesterday. Especially the tip on screwing the module to a piece of wood and using a crowbar was helpful. Found cold solder spots on the power connector only. Soldered using a 100w solder gun (still neede some time) and went for a test run. Lights came off after 1 min and the abs works.

Will this repair work on a 2004 s80? Is there anything different about the brake control module on that model and year that is different and would make the information on this thread inapplicable?

Well i must admit Lee your tricks work well on my s70 99, once the module was open it was kind of hard to find the cold joints so i rewelded all that you circle in your pics and a few more . now brake ,abs, arrow, lights are off every thing works well .
speedo and odometer are also fine, now the only light that is still on {check engine } and if it was triked by this problem , i read elswhere that you can go to dealer to get it reset or it will turn off by it self by using your car on three different occasion , for at least 20 minutes each , with different speed ranging 20 ,40 , 60 , mph and stop and go, just thaught i would throw that in there,it could help someone.

Another success story here on a 98 v70 177K.... hardest part was separating the top off... the power pins had definite cold-solder joints and took a TON of heat (had to up my solder station to about 400c). Brought the temp back down for the smaller pins and added a bit of fresh solder to each. I also decided to be brave and re-flowed each of the solenoid connections as well.

Hello,

I have a 1996 850GLT with 174k on it. When I bought the car last year (at 155k), the car's ABS and Tracs lights were both on (the speedometer works). The car had been sitting for a couple of years, so the previous owner could not recall any of the initial symptoms. I bought it anyways.

When I took it in for the first round of repairs (around 160k), I had my mechanic read the codes for the ABS light. He said that I needed a new ABS Control Unit and a new sensor as well (this was almost a year ago, so I do not recall which one). Dejected, and with an unstable job environment, I elected to survive last winter on new tires alone.

Now that next winter is around the corner (and my future apartment does not allow tenants to work on cars in their lots), it's time to look into this again. I'm not particularly mechanically apt, but I did fix the odometer today so I feel a bit emboldened.

Should I try to focus on the error in the ABS sensor first? I cannot remember which wheel it was on, so should I have him read the codes again? Or should I just fix the module?

In your situation....just fix the module first and see if it does it.. It likely isn't a sensor anyway, that's just one of the codes he was getting from the module.

Matty~ Do you have any suggestions for those of us with later model [ post 2001 ] Volvos with ABS error codes? Do you know if the Mark 25 BCM can be repaired at all? Rebuilt? Sourced? Thanks for your help.
