The system can have several settings and features changed but it requires a Volvo Scan Tool and the PIN code for alarm options that come from a Volvo dealer and is something Volvo charges the dealer for. If you ground the wire from alarm to starter relay it will override the alarm's ability to prevent starting.

thanks all ! Good explanation on immobilizer circuitry .I had no ground to the start relay coil windings (because the alarm was armed) duh !After reading the posts and owners manual I realized what was going on ,locked and unlocked the door and the starter works fine .THere are 2 relays under the supplementary fuse box cover (not lid) that are identical to the starter relay .Does someone know what function they perform ?

I'm having a problem with my 98 V70 XC, the other day I went to unlock the drivers door and it just turns with no resistance and would not unlock the car. I unlocked the rear door to get in and the alarm tripped and it won't start. I got to the black box under the dash and have the Denso lock alarm control. Is there anything I can do to disable the starter kill?

I don't know about killing it - But you could take a crack at fixing the problem.
It sounds like the linkage from the lock cylinder in the door has become disconnected
from the latch. The latch includes the switch that arms and disarms the system with a key.

If you pull the door panel, you should be able to see the problem and reattach the linkage.
And I'm not positive, but I think the rear hatch lock may also disarm or reset the system.
Worth a shot.
Best of Luck!

BEJinFbk,

Before reading your post, when I got home from work I took the door panel off and did exactly what you said and came back here to post exactly what you said. I just spent a little over a grand on and installed a re-manufactured engine last week after a meltdown in the 120 degree heat, the car has over 300K on it and I was not about to give up on the car over a door key!

I'm just going to leave it unlocked from now on, we live out in the country and the window is worth more than anything in the car anyway. Even if the car didn't run I would keep it for the sound system and seats alone but am ecstatic to have it running like it's 1998 all over again.

Thanks!

-Ryan

So was it the linkage? From your reply, sounds like it's still Tango Uniform.
It may be the latch assembly is toast, but that's not too tough to swap.
And the sound and seats? Right there with ya! I do love this car...
Glad she's running well for you - Roll On!

Yep, the linkage from the lock assembly to the actuator was gone.

I'd still love to just be rid of the immobilizer so I can lock it and enter through the 5th door if needed, but understand why it's best not to post how to disable it online. I'm just going to leave a T-20 and T-25 bit and screw driver in the car just in case the kids or I lock the doors by mistake.

Went for a nice long 3hr drive tonight I was so happy to have her back. It's been 100+/- here for months and the Volvo is the only car with COLD A/C, best part is we can buy ice cream at the store and make it home before it melts.

Similar question I just bought a 2002 XC70 and am having trouble with the front door lock. When I put the key in it will unlock the driver door but not the others and it will not deactive the alarm. it will lock all the doors. (I have no Fob for the vehicle) I was going to have a remotestart/alarm put in but they cant get this alarm to deactive all the time any ideas???

Not really - Ask the folks in the newer XC70 forum section...
You have a 2002. Totally different car. This sections tops out at '00.

You should see if your car has a receiver for the central locking system. Doesn't make sense to buy an aftermarket system if you already have a factory one. If you can find the receiver all you have to do is read the FCC number off it and purchase the transmitters off Ebay. I had two new ones delivered for 33 bucks. It is so nice to just hit the button. BUT I have a wagon and I have no clue why it doesn't work for the back door.
