94 850 Axle
Ok, Left front tire tread wore out on the inside, after jacking up the car and grabbing the tire in the 3 and 9 o'clock positions the tire moves 1''. It looks like the CV joint is moving (either at a joint inside the boot OR inside the Trans) but the tie rod end is solid. The boots arent ripped so I cant see whats bad. The right side doesnt move and that tire seems ok (maybe just a little inside wear)

If the boots are OK on the axle it is likely a bad ball joint or perhaps a bad hub.

I guess what I should have asked was, should there be 1'' of play ( I can see the axle moving that much) but only on the left side. The hub was replaced (Volvo) a yr ago but agree that the ball joint could be bad.
I guess my next question would be, do the axles slide back an forth on the splines or are they held in with C-clips or something
(this would explain the movement)

The axle is held into the hub with a large nut. When you pull the wheel off you can see the end of the axle with the nut on it in the middle of your brake rotor. The axle should not be able to move back and forth in the hub when the nut is tight.
You don't have a bad axle. Or if you do it is coincidental and unrelated to your movement. The axle doesn't keep the wheel steady. That is accomplished by the control arm/ball joint and the steering knuckle. Lee is correct in all liklihood and I believe you have a removeable ball joint which will be good for you on the repair as you may not need a control arm.

94 was a split year for the removable ball joint. My 94 takes the newer style where it is part of the control arm.

Ok, it was the ball joint and it is the removeable type. Thanks for all the help.
Still wondering if the axle is held in the trans by a Circlip or not, but it may be a moot point once the ball joint is repaired..
