Re: S70 / V70 front seat swap to 850
I just tried this swap, I found the wiring quite different between my 855 seats and the v70. My 855 seats were both manual, the v70 seats were manual for the passenger, power for the driver's. I assumed I would find the power seat wiring when I removed the manual seat, not the case. So, I ended up swapping the skins from the v70 to the 855 seats.

Thanks a lot for this write-up. It will help me. Haynes has no pictures, and as usual isn't completely clear on the procedure.
I'm swapping driver (maybe passenger) seat(s) from a 1998 S70 T5 into another 1998 S70 T5. The only thing I'm worried about is having an SRS light on in the new T5 - I don't want that...
In the message on volvoforums where 'rspi" put a link to this tutorial, he said that the 850's and 960's have an "airbag trigger protector", which is that red 'lockout key' depicted in this writeup.
Now, In my Haynes Manual (which is for S70, V70, and C70) it mentions there is a red pin or something like that in order to avoid the same problem...I don't have the Haynes with me right now.
...So my question is; IS there something similar I have to do in regards to my S70 T5 when I swap these seats? Picture?
Again - thanks. Good Job

I'm a wee bit confused about the "Driver seatbelt bracket" - why bother swapping those parts? It looks a lot like you removed the rivet and then swapped in parts that were identical? Why not just leave the original V70 one in place and bolt the 850 seatbelt through it?

Just sucessfully did this swap from a 98 V70 AWD I found at the junkyard to my 95 850 GLT.
Instead of a chisel I used a sawz-all with a metal blade attachment.
All the electronics and everything hooked right up, no splicing needed on my model.
Great write up and thanks for the hint on cutting the rivet! might have taken me longer if not for this post.

Hi,
I wish read this little bit earlier. I have 2001 V70 and swapped the front seats yesterday and with 2001 XC. Driver side has power for a minute and it dies. The airbag light and engine light came on. I took the battery out for couple of minutes. It just get rid of the engine but Airbag. How can I fix the Airbag light and driver seat? Swapping the little boxes under the seats?
thanks

I did a whole interior swap from charcoal to tan interior this year on my 1994 850 wagon. Since my vehicle is a wagon and I needed to swap all the seats out for my new tan ones, I just bought the newer style seat belts/retractor from the donor car. Seat belts are a slightly different color and I wanted everything to match anyways. The donor car used was 1998 XC70. Like someone mentioned before, you can just swap out seat cushion and seat back to simplify the process and you don't have to mess with the seat belt issue.
+1. Just swap out your seat tracks with that of the donor car, two screws on either side of the track to remove then they pop right off. I saw a junkyard 2000 c70 T5 with tan soft leather, had to take them home and put em in my 850. Both cars have power seats on both sides.michaelairllc wrote:This is a great fix for old seats. One thing I found is that you can swap out the lower part of the attaching seat rail with 4 screws and avoid any drilling for the seat belt swap out. Just be sure that the rails are in the same position on the gear when reinstalling (preferably all the way aft). I was curious why the seat belt coupler needed to be changed from one seat to another. Great info on Airbags.

Just a quick word of warning on swapping seats around, if you stick to pre 99 cars anything goes as the seats will be the same BUT 99/00 had a number of differences:
1/ SIPS Bags are electrically fired so if you fit a 99/00 seat in to a car that is 98 or earlier the SIPS bags won't work as the car isn't wired for them.
2/ If your car is 99/00 try to stick with seats from this era, you can fit the 98 and earlier seats to a 99/00 and the air bags will still work as they are mechanically fired, BUT the cars SRS system will still expect to see the electrical initiator connected to the end of the green and purple two pin connector in the base of the seat. Obviously the electrical SIPS initiator isn't present within a pre 99 seat so the easy way around this is to cut off the green/ purple connectors and solder a 2,2 Ohm resistor across the two wires, wrap it up with tape and bury it under the carpet - If you don't do this you will have the SRS caption illuminated.
3/ The seatbelt clip (the bit with the red push to release seatbelt button) changed on the 99/00 cars to one that contains an inductive proximity switch rather than the earlier seats which used a micro-switch. These components are not interchangeable so keep whatever was fitted to the car to use again - If you try to wire up the old 98 and earlier seatbelt clip in to a 99/00 car you won't have the fasten seatbelt signs working and you will have the SRS fault light on all the time.
4/ If your car is wired for powered seats and as part of the seat swap you fit powered seats then find they don't work you need to add two self resetting fuses in the fusebox under the hood near the base of the windscreen, to fit these you need to take the entire top cover off the fusebox - Mike

Thanks for the extra info but aren't all cars from '93 up have SIPS?
I recall overseas 850s with SIPS stickers on the rear windshield back in the 90s as a young child and my car has SIPS stamped all over it.
