No gears no codes

Post by josefdavid »

Hi fellow brickers,
I have a 98 s70 T5 I love it. just the other day. It decided to lose all its gears. I have no check engine light no flashing arrow and no gears. I shift into reverse it idles higher than in park when I shift into neutral I will idols lower than any other gear. Can some one please help?

Without the flashing up arrow all that I can come up with is that the torque converter blew up. Have you drained some fluid to look for metal shards? When the torque converter goes it tends to completely contaminate the fluid with fine metal that also contaminates the rest of the transmission.

Yes there is a fix but it isn't fun. Start shopping for a used transmission.

They should come with the torque converter.

Toms usually has a bunch of them on eBay and Erie-Vo-vo should have them as well if you can't find anything locally. I think both of them give a 6 month warranty. Working with Erie Vo-vo is easier on the phone than by email.

Easiest will be from a 94 through 98, 850 or S/V/C70, turbo or non-turbo: automatic transmissions are all the same. Presumably the 98 AWD transmissions are different but I don't know.

just get a torque converter and change the filter and fluid...just pull the old one out and install the new one.put it in and turn it till it pops all the way in and then make sure to turn again and try to pop it in again to make sure it is in..easy fix, just a little hard job pulling the tranny out.but you can have it out and in in about 3hrs give or take..goodluck man.cause your clutches should still be fine..dont try to drive it at all if it is a blown tq.

What color was the fluid and how much drained out? Any chunks of metal on the drain plug magnet?

Mostly true - the final drive ratio is different between turbo's and NA. 2.74:1(NA) 2.54:1(T). They can be interchanged, you'll likely see a difference in your MPG's and RPM's at highway speeds. There are plenty of these transmissions out there, get one from a turbo if you can. car-part.com is a good place to start.

Not so much. You are NOT replacing the filter screen on this transmission without removing the front pump and housing. There is a filter, but it's not servicable without taking the transmission apart. The 3hr time quote is VERY optimistic.

The fluid had been drained and filled about 3000 miles ago so it was more redish pink than brown. On the magnet there was build up of gunk and in the fluid there was also glittering flakes. Is it common for a trans in my situation to throw no codes at all not even a torque converter code. I'm puzzled for the fact it'll get gears for a couple of minutes then as your driving disengages. And my idle is all screwy higher in drive once disengaged then once you put it in park the idle goes down as if it's in gear.....
