but it does unlock either with the front door or remote?

if it's unlocking through other methods but not with the key, it's most likely a broken lock mechanism. peeling the interior trim off of 855s isn't terribly hard. not sure about the V70s.

I am having the exact same problem. It went from being a moody trunk latch to a completely inoperable trunk latch over the course of about 4 months.

I understand that taking a sledgehammer to the rear door would be an irrational response, but it does seem like the most satisfying alternative in the short term. I am open to other thoughts about actually fixing the latch though.

I had a similar problem. My rear hatch would unlock, but the hatch could not be opened most of the time. The problem (apparently specific to Volvos), was that the lock 'linkage' needed to be adjusted.

Has anyone had any luck with this? Is it in fact the rear door linkage and is there a Volvo bulletin covering this?

Anyone know the best way to remove the tailgate cover of a 98 V70? I got all the perimeter clips off, but having a heck of a time with the plastic housing around the inside lever.

Thanks!
