Loose Wire from Fuse box?

Post by Volvo4Life777 »

Wile under the hood again of my precious 1998 Volvo S70 after buying some spark plugs and getting ready to take some of the oil out of this baby. I noticed something very odd. A loose wire

It seems to be connected to the brake fluid and fuel injector systems the main wire branches from the fuse box off into 4"limbs"

1 the Brake fluid container (top)

2 the Brake fluid container (bottom)

3 Right above the throttle wire coming from the gas pedal

4 This mystery of a loose wire

I pulled the stats on the "wire head" it reads the following

Volvo

979 040 Code I

979 041 Code II

979 042 Code III

979 043 Code IV

This Wire Diagram was of no use to me

Please help, I am hoping his is a Turbo feature only I do not have a Turbo.

Thanks

My '98 V70 has this connector as well. It is routed to the edge of the cowling just below the left windshield wiper (when facing the front of the car). It is held there by a small metal clip next to a screw. This connector does not appear to be used and is just held in place. Perhaps for optional equipment or diagnostics. Yours appears to have come loose and is rattling around.

You can see it in the first photo here:

Looks like the wire that goes to this part in the engine bay of my 1998 V70 XC. I don't know what it does, but my car is a 2.4L turbo vice N/A. Anyone know what this is?

What is this? It's to the right of the upper engine mount.

I noticed a post courtesy of Mr. rspi that referred to a horn for the alarm system located at the center of the firewall. It does have the look of a horn about it. Does the AWD have a different alarm system than the 850/V70/S70?

no my 94 850 is the same alarm. Yes it does look like a horn but those 2 things in front of the car grill between the lights are the horns. As you can see one is chipped.

The owners manual refers to an optional alarm feature that will sound a separate siren when the battery is disconnected while the alarm system is engaged. Perhaps this horn is the "siren" that they refer to. Those cars that lack this siren, perhaps also lack this "battery disconnect" alarm feature.

The alarm is an option in the '98 70 series. To save money at the factory
and also make it easier to add options later at the dealer, all models share
a full wiring harness.
What I think you're looking at is the connector for the single, round alarm
horn that would mount on the firewall if your car had this option.
(Or maybe the car DID have an alarm and someone removed the horn.)
The two horns behind the grill have nothing to do with the alarm.

Chances are slim that you'll ever see a battery back-up siren on
any of these Gen 1 cars, but many later Volvos had that option.

OK, that explains it! I guess my car doesn't have an alarm. I really never paid any attention to it. It does have the little red light on the dash, but I've only now noticed that it does not blink when the car is locked. My V50 on the otherhand does have it (I bought the car used, so I didn't have a say in the matter) and I noticed it did some seemingly unpredictable things that puzzled me until I read the owners manual. For example, if you unlock the car but fail to open one of the doors, then it would lock itself again and re-arm the alarm after a period of time. I had deemed it unpredictable and untrustworthy until I found out that it is apparently a desirable "feature".

Given that the wiring harness can support options like the Alarm system: Does anyone know what it would take to add an alarm system to a car that didn't have it? I wondered how easy it might be to source a system at the junkyard and add it to my V70.

Thanks!
