Both of the upper gears are camshafts. The crankshaft is at the very bottom of the engine, where the serpentine belt is also attached.

Is this crank? I read in one of the post, rotating crank with 30mm socket would rotate cams and align each notch to its corresponding right angle marker on the cover as Robert shows above. It wasn't clear with the belt ON or OFF. Common sense says ON.

Yes that's the crank. Yes with the belt on. You never want to turn it or the cams with the belt off.

That is the front of a 960 which is basically the same, just 1 extra piston and loaded from the front of the car.

Are these rotations clockwise, always? Can it be counterclocked to tweak few teeths? Are there options other than using the ipd's locking tool?

ALWAYS turn the crankshaft clockwise when you're spinning the belt around.

Camshafts can go counter-clockwise to line up the marks again if you knock it too far forward by mistake.

I didn't use a locking tool, but it probably would have been helpful. Just gotta make sure everything lines up and the belt it tight before pulling the pin on the tensioner, and you're good.

I came across some very helpful instruction on MVS in past few days. Excellent stuff!

There were also hints of belts stretching loose, but almost no reference to the reuse of serpentine belt. I intend to reuse mine, the belt has 20k on it since the last TB job. I will not have anything to compare with, is it a pure simple visual inspection, and then making a common sense decision?

Also there are two sizes, new 1743mm, and old 1623mm. It is hard to tell when was the new routing started. With new water pump installed, will i need to replace any item from the typical TB job components such as idler pulley, tensioner to adjust for the new routing -- being thorough?

I am fewer steps away from taking on the task.

Serpentine belt is a visual thing - you look for cracking in the treads - it should be perfectly fine after 20K. There's a tensioner in the system that has a good amount of movement to take up slack. Make note of the routing on your car before you take it off and put it back the same way.

You can play with the tensioner/idler bearings to see if they seem dry or make noise. If they still turn smoothly, just go ahead and reuse them for the serpentine belt, then check them out again next time it needs a belt.

There is another belt outside of the TB cover. Naked and visible, it goes around the crank, alternator(?), etc. Will it need to come off?

That's the serpentine/accessory belt...and yes, it needs to be moved out of the way.

You'll need to make or buy a special tool to release the tensioner on the serpentine belt, but it's pretty easy to get back on.
