850 cam seal replacement..

hi guys,im rik, im new here, well new registering...always look at the fantstic help you supply...

ok my help request is this....

my 850 t5 exhaust camshaft seal needs replacing, ive looked in the haynes etc, it says remove this, remove that, blah blah blah.....

is it possible just to remove the timing belt tensioner,to get some slack on the belt, and undo the three bolts on the sprocket and remove it to get to the seal......without having to remove drive belt,timing belt etc etc...

it just looks like you can do it an easier way than stated in the haynes.....

thanks guys, some of you will know....ive put a video of the camshaft in action, as it were, so you can see the seal turning with the shaft on the exhaust side...

Very smooth sounding! That's the good part.
I've never done the camshaft seals myself so I can't offer you much. However, there is a Service Manual for free download in the sticky section...top of the page in this section of the forum. I advise you to download that. It will have this repair in there and since it's official Volvo info, it won't be opinions and such, but facts as to the how-to's.
Good luck and let us know how this progresses.

ok, im answering my own request.....

yes i did the cam seal by removing the tensioner, then slipping the sprocket off to get the seal.....all back together now......working....for now

er, no, i didn`t use that, as it still said remove timing belt etc etc, and the 3 cam sprocket bolts, it said use a holding tool, i just used a 10 mm ring spanner on em, came undone very easy.....i marked it all up first of course...

the worst bit was after compressing the tensioner, i took about 10 minues to do it, and locked it with a drill bit, was releasing the drill bit, had to get a mate with a large torque wrench to press down on the tensioner wheel from above while i got the drill bit out with pliers......phew...i couldnt of done it, at all on my own....maybe theres an easier way, but ive never done this job before....

forgot to say mines a 95 model....t5 estate/station wagon...

Step 1 - MARK THE CAM SPROCKETS TO THE CAM. Do it in more than 1 place so that you can be sure to get them back on exactly as they came off.

Step 2 - Remove the timing belt. - Well documented.

Step 3 - Remove the cam sprocket bolts.

Step 4 - Pull the cam sprockets.

Step 5 - Remove the seals. They came out easier if you walk them out with a seal puller. A little on one side and then a little on the other side.

Step 6 - Install the new seals. I'm sure there is a Volvo part number something or another tool to do it but you can carefully walk the new seals back on with the tap-tap-tap, tap-tap-tap, tap-tap-tap method - light taps so as to not deform the new seals.

Step 7 - Resinstall the cam sprockets being very careful to get the precisely lined up as removed.

Step 8 - Re-install or replace the timing belt.

Thanks Lee. I haven't removed the timing cover yet (probably will be this weekend) but there is oil dripping out of it, so I'm assuming that must be the cam seals? What do you think? What would cause cam seals to leak?

One of the things I discovered as I've been going through inspecting and tuning the car was the flame trap was completely clogged up with dried black crud. I wonder if that being clogged would have caused the cam seals to leak?

The plugged up PCV usually takes the rear main seal first but it certainly can cause a failure on the cam seals. I guess it depends on which is the weak link. Once you pull the cover you will know for sure. Did you get the PCV system cleaned up and fixed? I would fix that before the seals so that you don't blow them again or, God forbid, the rear main seal.
