Am almost through replacing the front left pad on my '03 XC70, but haven't been able to get the spring clip back on to secure the the new pad to the caliper. Anyone remember an easy technique ? Perhaps put the ends of the spring in the caliper holes FIRST ?

I had trouble getting the spring clips back in place on my '97 855 GLT. I tried putting the top end in first, and then the bottom end, but they kept slipping out. I found that a good clean pair of pliers (with no grease!) and a tight grip was helpful. I put the top end in first and the bottom end in second. It's not easy! Good luck! :)

This is my first attempt at replacing rotors and pads myself. I made my first attempt at replacing the compliance bushings on my 03 Element successfully so I am hoping this is an easier feat.

Any resources (I bought the service manual for the Element) or suggestions?

Welcome to MVS,

It should be about the same for your 2004 but I don't know that for sure. You might want to fire up a new thread in the P-2 forum and link back to this thread. If there are any significant differences I'm sure someone in that forum will point them out.

I have a 1997 850 GLT that I am getting ready to change the brake pads on. I have downloaded the tutorial on how to proceed,however, I got to undoing the 7mm hexes and ran into a problem. The hex I used is with a bunch of other hexes that pull out. I could not get the hex to loosen the bolt that holds the caliper on.

Would I be better off buying 1 7mm hex by itself ? I didn't know how much muscle I should apply and which way to turn it. I tried going clockwise as you look at the hex in the socket but no joy. The hex was just as immovable in the opposite direction so I put it all back together to give the forums a try. Anything that I am missing ?? Details needed.

I did this job on my 1995 850 Turbo a few years ago and things went very smooth there. Can't figure out what the big diff is here.

If you can, get a mirror and look at the heads of the bolts. I had one set, I think it was on my son's '96, where it had a Torx head bolts on one side. That had me frustrated for a while until I figured out what was going on.

The bolts all have a right hand thread so CCW will loosen them. I use the Allen head 3/8" drive sockets to do this job rather than trying to use a hex key.

Well, I finally have finished installing the new pads. I am busy writing a detailed instruction guide for noobs. It will have all the extra info that it necessary to complete the repair with pics. Hope to have it ready in about a week. Can't figure out which format to save it to and where to put it here so it will be available for anyone wishing to get a hold of it easily. Can anyone provide any help ?? :D
