740 GLE 16 Valve - Flywheel issue

Post by bedem »

Last Monday I had a local mechanic replaced the rear crankshaft seal and to do this he had to take the auto transmission out. When it was all re-assembled the car ran very badly, would not idle, hunted up and down in revs and when driven was down on power.

They had the car all last week and could not find the problem. I took it to another mechanic today and he had his diagnostic guy look at it and concluded that the flywheel is installed wrong. Is this possible? I thought that there was a locating lug that meant you could only put it in the right way. Can it be installed offset?

When the transmission went back in he had to replace the flywheel sensor as it was damaged when removed. I suspect that the replacement sensor could be the wrong one and it may be the source of the problem. What do you guys think?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The flywheel can be installed out of line as shown in the attached.

However, the impulse sensor which sits on the top of the bell housing may indeed be the wrong one. There is a sensor, part number 271949, that is only to be used on any of the 16 valve engines fitted to the 740. The 8 valve engines sensor part number is 1317030.

Thanks Bill.

The Volvo people here in Oz tell me that the same sensor fits all three models (turbo, 16 valve & 8valve) here in Australia. Very frustrating for me as my car currently runs like a dog and the expert reckons that it's the flywheel that's positioned wrong.

My mechanic wants to pull the gearbox out again on Monday to be sure.

There is an easier way to check. With no.1 at tdc, the 'space' on the flywheel should be visible at the starter hole. Of course, you have to remove the starter. 'Space' is where there isn''t one of the holes that the sensor reads.

Well the gearbox was removed yesterday afternoon and after much guessing at where the right position was, it's back in the right spot. The diagram didn't help the mechanic as there didn't seem to be the markings as shown.

Inga (my 1990 740GLE) is back running right and set for a road trip to southern NSW from her home on the Gold Coast.
