Re: Muffler Repair Recommendations [ 1997 Volvo 850 GLT ]
Is it really neacessary to treat the exterior of the muffler with rust inhibitor and paint? I thought the exhaust system corroded from the inside because of trapped acidic water accelerated by high temperature.

Good points.
The rust I observed and treated was on the exterior of the muffler. I realize the environment inside
the muffler is more hostile but there is no doubt that the rust on the exterior, left unchecked, would
eventually destroy the muffler. There were no holes or soft spots to indicate this rust was coming through
from the inside. I would expect holes by now if this were the case. The seams were the main point of rusting
and the rust inhibitor seems to have stopped this deterioration.
In terms of cost we're talking $20-30. urbex - You're probably correct that I could pick up a used muffler for this
much but it's the complications during installation that worry me since nothing seems to be as easy as it sounds.
With a long list of other things that need to be repaired I really see this as a way to focus time and funds on
other more important repairs.
And in some ways I'm experimenting with stuff and having fun...

I haven't had to do this yet but I'm interested in how much time and money you put into this
repair. I'm still waiting for my muffler to rot out but the high temp ceramic paint and furnace
cement has held up better than I expected.
