ABS module again?

Post by januwan »

I noticed following symptoms today. I turned the ignition and the engine started as expected but the ABS light was on. I was not able to compress selector knob on the gear selector (shift stick) and could not shifted to D. I pressed on shiftlock override button and slide to D. Next I turn OFF ignition then started again and the ABS light was OFF. It was during the day.
In the evening it happened again but this time even after turning OFF and ON ignition the ABS light stayed ON. Additionally I was not able to turn low beam on , dashboard light were OFF and speedometer and odometer did not work. I was driving with high beam on the highway. Arrived home, turned OFF and ON ignition few times and finally ABS light went away and everything returned to normal. Drove around the block, everything was functioning perfectly. My ABS module was repaired by Victor at 77K (8 years ago).
Any recommendations greatly appreciated

That sounds like the ignition switch is the problem.

The next time it happens jiggle/manipulate the key and see if that takes care of it, if it does then it is the ignition switch. Everything you're describing points to it.

Assuming it is ignition switch, does it have to be Volvo part or after market part is acceptable.
Thanks

I have a bad ABS module right now and it doesn't lock my shifter at all. as somebody already stated, you could have a ignition switch problem. the switch itself could be bad.

Yes, it was ignition switch. I replaced it yesterday. The original failed after 90K, the second one (also Volvo) after 65K. I hope this is not indication of the Volvo's parts quality.
Thanks to all who gave me pointers.

The abs units should have been made better.
