Hi everyone. I work at a small repair shop and specialize in Volvos with a small Volvo auto wrecker out back. I've replaced the small rubber gear inside the 850 odometers several times now. I think my boss has been getting them from the dealer but if not, they come from Worldpac. About 50 bucks Canadian and it comes with new dash lights as a kit. You remove the cluster and remove the odometer assembly. Remove the electric motor on the side and the tiny gear will be just underneath it. It's about 2 - 2.5mm in diameter and you'll see right away that one or two teeth will be bent over. I would go into more depth with pics and so on but I just don't have much time, sorry. Feel free to ask any questions if you like. Also I apologize if this was already explained to everyone somewhere. Love my 98' V70XC!

Mine just failed yesterday @ 82,000 miles. I just need to order that gear and get it going again. Should be a fun project!

82k miles on a '97! Low! (Not talking about the odo, but rather the Volvo itself.)

Its really nice and I plan on keeping it forever this time. My last R (98 V70R Saffron) I sold after getting scared about a transmission failure when I hit 150k about 5 years ago.

Hey everyone, I'm sorry I miss informed you about where to get the odometer kit. I found out we get them from a shop in Surrey B.C. (Vancouver area) called Ed Schram Motors Ltd. They get the kits out of the states, not sure from where. Here's their web addy. More info when I get it. I Hope this helps you folks.

Mean failure at 138k

Mode at 125k

Sample size 31, so statistics are pretty good

I am curious about the meaning of this statistic; why is it reasonable to ignore the more than 1/3 of the odo gears in the survey, that haven't even failed? In other words, I can't really do much with "there is a 63% chance the gear fails, and if it does then it happens on average at about 140k." I will admit however, that the data are counter to my previous assumption, which was "they all fail in the first 15 years or so."

Seems biased to just take the mean of the failed gears, and ignore the ones still clicking away. Maybe you would want to know the mileage on the non-failures, add up all the miles, then get a frequency (miles / failure). You could even do that now by assuming the average mileage on intact gears is the same as the average mileage on failed gears (about 140k, it's a flawed guess but at least is based on something). Just food for thought ...

hmmm I also wonder how many of these data points are from x70s vs. 850s, and how the models are distributed. Might be interesting.

Should all be 850s. The x70's just dont fail. They're digital, run from the ABS module.

Oh, right! The poll should just be 850s, I wonder if the bulk of those "still working" are indeed x70s.
