2008 v70 steering worse and now whining after oil change

Post by John I white »

Hi all,
The steering had been getting a stiff at times. Not always, sometimes.

My engineer brother in law drained the power steering oil and replaced it yesterday and now it's even worse and accompanied by godawful whining / whirring sounds that raise in pitch and volume as we accelerate. The steering wheel is also vibrating and even shaking for the very first time too. It also sound terrible and vibrates as we turn but even makes a lower noise at a standstill.

Any advice for us? We'll arrange a service but the soonest will be in 4 days. It really was drivable until yesterday now we're worried that driving it is causing damage and is even unsafe!

Thanks,
John

As previous poster already asked did you use the Pentosin oil??
Do NOT use red ATF oil in those systems.

Have you checked all hoses that they are connected so you dont get air sucked into the system?

Hi again,
It's Eurol brand.
Green in colour
Power steering fluid C.
Fully synthetic.
DIN 51524 PART 3

Reads, "meets requirements of VOLVO STD 1273.36"

The motor factors reccommended it for this year of v70.

Hi. My brother in law suggested that there might be a bit of air in it. But he checked all the hoses and they seemed fine.

Thanks again

He may have already tried it, in case not, try to bleed the system to get all the air out. Then you may find you need to add more fluid to replace the air in the system.

Hi there,
Yes he pumped - rather than drained - via a syphon tube and an attached atomiser pump (!) a lot of brown fluid out and brushed out some grunge then filled it up with new stuff.
Should the fluid actually be drained out the bottom somehow instead? Will that help to remove air bubbles/locks?

Your engineer probably forgot that two different fluids have different density, kinematic viscosity, etc. He did it totally wrong, no wonder that car complains as it is faced to cavitation effects in steering pump.

The whole system needs to be flushed, not just oil tank.

Do you mean there's still some old fluid further into the system with new stuff sat on top of it?
