Re: 1999 V70 Shifter Up Arrow Problem

The only thing I can think of is Autel didn't set up the Denso ECM as a passthrough for info properly.

I had the same vehicle as yours (until it was smashed) and was using Vida/Dice to test the trans and engine; great diagnostics on the Denso system.

While you had that pan off did you test each solenoid for resistance?

I did not test the solenoids for resistance, but should have. It's easy to take the pan off again. I got it down to 30 minutes in a heated garage. Where can I find the resistance specs for the solenoids?

Look at the attached picture of my kids 1998 V70 as it sits with the tail in a river. This is why I bought a 1999 V70 for $1000 that needed a little work. The frame is bent and the front fenders, bumper and head lights need to be replaced. Not worth it with 180K on it.

As a last ditch effort, try a different trans selection in the menu. I'm going to go outside in a few minutes and see if it works with the Autel.

For what it's worth, I went to move the car earlier and it won't move at all. The shifter and linkage is moving as it's supposed to but it's a no-go, full fluid and fresh. It was making a weird noise this week so I'm hoping for either a broken axle or the drivers side axle popped out.

I've tried every selection on the Autel for 1997 through 2000 that shows an AW50-42 tranny on either an S70 or V70. All of them show a TCM available EXCEPT the car I have, a 1999 V70. I have looked into TCM error codes for all the other year and models and there are none present. I have even tried to erase codes and it accepts the request.

I believe the 1999 V70 FWD (the one I have) was the only Vovlo car model and year that had the combo of a non-turbo DENSO fuel injection system coupled with an AW50-42 tranmission. Since the tranny codes come through the ECM, I'm starting to believe the Autel analyzer I'm using can't see the tranny or engine codes. Oh by the way, the Autel also CAN NOT see the ECM either when designating this DENSO ECM.

Based on my attempts to clean the PNP and checking the TCM connections, my only options left are to:

1) Open the tranny pan again and ohm out the S1 and S2 solenoids
2) Get another analyzer that can see the DENSO ECM and AW50-42 tranny combo
3) Go to the dealer and get porked so they can read the system which will cost almost as much as me buying a better analyzer.

Any and all help on this one is always appreciated.

I have a similar issue with my car( flashing arrow, nos 3rd gear starts) and I had my 99s70 in the shop for 7 weeks for abs ,check engine, flashing arrow, sts and other lamps. The shop could not find anything bu t a fault with connecting to the ECM or TCM. I pulled my car out as I wanted to work with xemodex. I now, only have a flashing arrow. I sent my modules into them and they contacted me and said they found no fault with the modules. Tony at xemodex sadi he still beleives the issue is with my TCM given all of the symptoms. I am now trying to source a used TCM and match part number for part number. I will advise on what happens once I receive the sourced part.
Matty Moo...Do you remember me, you sent me an ABS module and I had the same symptoms, so I sent it back.....well, I am still trying to resolve my issues with the car. I am down to a flashing arrow, but it drives fine for now.......I have been trying to resolve this problem since last year. I am beyond frustrated!!!

Reading trans and ECM codes on anything but a Dice with Vida can lead to a lot of head scratching. Vida WILL give you a trans code if hooked up to this vehicle

I put in a replacement TCM and verified via Xemodex that it will work. After the TCM replacement...I still have a flashing arrow and a check engine light.....now....when I put the car in reverse, it goes in really hard....with the old module it did not do that......

nzvinr...everything you are describing with your car is IDENTICAL to the symptoms and attempted repairs I have done. Right now I have put in a used TCM and I am able to read engine codes, the arrow is no longer blinking, but IS on solid now in all gear settings. I too have been working with Tony at xemodex and I am about to send both TCMs to him for cloning. The only code I found with the replacement TCM was P1057. I need to look this up.

XeModex are a great service I'm sure however proper diagnostics to determine wiring issue or otherwise is what's called for.

With Activations menu in Vida you can test each solenoid, read the gear lever position through the PNP via TCM, and test for correct bus communication of TCM with ECM as well as scan the TCM for error codes while driving.

Modules rarely fail on these cars. At this age wiring is going to be a more likely culprit. Establishing continuity with every connector in the loom starting from solenoid wiring all the way back to the TCM pins for the 20 or so connections required for operation is the place to begin.
