1998 V70XC Cracked Oil Pan

Post by FARMER BOB »

So it finally happened. Driving the V 70 through the back pasture, we hit a rock, and put a quite large hole into the cast aluminum oil pan. Surprised to find no skid plate and definitely recommend getting one for all of you thinking that AWD XC may actually mean cross country instead of tooling long the highways and by ways. Still no biggie, went on line and to a couple of junk shops and was able to find a used pan for a 98 V70. But lo and behold the sucker didn't fit. Turns out the car was actually built in 11 97 and didn't have the newer '98 V70 engine, but in fact was a '97 850 engine - despite having all the 98 Volvo paperwork; as well as all the V70 markings on the body. After lots of running round, arguing with Volvo, comparing photos; we were convinced that we had the right part, which yes turned out to be for an 850 '97, which was the precursor to the V-70. Cleaned it up; put on the gasket sealant stuff, bolted it on, waited overnight for everything to cure, changed the filter, filled up the oil and were good to go. Whole project was doable but made more tedious by poor parts identification, so just be careful and remember a picture is worth a thousand words.
