changed oil, now have lifter ticking all the time

Post by jrrood »

hello,

i recently did an oil change using 5/30 synthetic (what ive always used) and now i have a ticking lifter. i did use a fram filter this time (only thing available) but after reading on here I'm going to swap it out tomorrow.

the thing that concerns me is the lifter noise does not go away after driving it for a while. I'm hoping the new filter will fix it as it did not make noise before the oil change.

any suggestions would be appreciated. this is in a v70 t-5

Thanks!

Get rid of the orange can of death, replace it with a Mahle or a MANN, and the lifter noise should go away. Particularly the noise at start up. Lifter noise at higher RPMs, after startup, is usually a sign that the sump O rings are bad but they typically don't go bad all at once as you describe the symptoms

145k on the car.

Orange can of death is going away tomorrow. I was running a premium Napa filter before that

Well, Please let us know if changing the oil filter helps. At 145k the sump seals can come into play. Are you using any oil between changes? And how often do you change your oil? Regards, SpeedyPete

i will let everyone know if the filter makes a difference. the car isn't burning any oil but i oil cooler lines have a leak so i do end up adding in between oil changes. those are next on my list to replace. i change the oil with full synthetic about every 5,000 miles.

Get rid of Fram ASAP!!!

Choices for 1993-1998 models:
Mann W917 (Bosch 72138 is basically Mann).
Bosch 3321 (Autozone has this)
Mahle OC-204 (Napa auto parts carries this)
2004 V70 2.5T 100K+
2005 XC90 2.5T 110K+

Buy a case from FCP. I bought the Mann W917's no ticking, 215K miles change about every 7500 with Walmart synthetic. Car is driven fairly hard, 100 miles a day and 70+

well, i replaced the filter, still ticking. I'm going to change to a heavier weight oil this afternoon to at least band-aid fix the issue (hopefully) for now. then replace my sump seals later this summer... not looking forward to that one!

This happened once before also where it ticked for a week, then went away for the entire winter.
