Front strut mount rebuild.
Re: Front strut mount rebuild.
I did this job today and it was much easier than expected. took me about 45 minutes per side to do. I bought the special tool from IPD and it really isn't the right tool - It does have a tool to grab the star shaped nut, but the counterhold part of the tool is not correct, at least not for the XC90. I ended up using a punch and a hammer to knock the nut loose.

Old thread but I want to ask the gurus a question.
I did the front suspension overhaul on my 1998 S70 (a 3500-lb car) a few years ago:

The question is for my newly acquired 2005 XC90 2.5T (a 4500-lb car):
- The SPRING COMPRESSOR is the type from Autozone, can I use these standard spring compressors (that I used on my 1998 S70) to compress the springs of an XC90?

Usually an AWD spring is quite a bit longer than a road car and generates a little more force when compressed. My XC70s springs were easily compressed with my el cheapo compressor using an air ratchet however I just don't like using them at all. An XC90's may be longer and of greater tension than an XC70, though.
The larger and more robustly made the lower the chance of breakage and potential injury, however even the best ones could slip.
There are solutions that are wall mounted and much safer. If you're a subscriber to BriansMobile on YouTube he dedicated a video to his new wall mounted unit.
