2002 V70 Transmission Issue

Post by fozzi19 »

Hello -

Just bought a 2002 V70 (automatic) with 52K on it from a dealer. After I bought it and drove it awhile it seemed to have issues of a "jerking" transmission. By this I mean, after I had driven it for 20 minutes and slowed down at a stop sign or light, after I would accelerate it would jerk into the next gear. It also would take a bit to switch from Reverse to Drive and when it did it kind of pounded into it...

I took the car back to the dealer and they flushed the transmission and filled it back up with fluid (volvo fluids) and it stills does this jerking, but only after I've driven it for 20-30 minutes...thoughts?

If your build date is early it may still have the stop neutral.
Did you get any software updates?
Have the B4 servo checked (cheap) then get back to me

Not sure if it has had the updates...The dealer that I purchase the Volvo from is not a Volvo dealership...what updates should I ask for?

Go to the dealer and ask for the updates for your car. Depending, some might be under a recall, so free- but don't count on it.

I called my local Volvo dealer and after they ran the VIN it was discovered that a recall was still out...she said it is a software update for the throttle module...will this solve the stop neutral issues?

No but have them look at the tranny fluid, ask them to see if your car will take any transmission software upgrades.
Since you already just did the fluid, hopefully there is some software.
The ETM recall also will help a bit with regards to smoothness.

As a followup to my last reply, I have taken the V70 to two different dealers and they both came back with a positive report on the transmission and can't find why its still jerking into gear...could it be the solenoid?

How is your upper torque (engine) mount. If it's bad, you'll feel some jerking too.

I'm thinking that someone did a flush with your car and put in Dexron III ATF. That is the wrong stuff. It MUST be replaced with JWS3309 Compliant ATF such as at the dealer or Mobil-3309. I would try flushing it with the proper fluid and see if this helps...The reason I say this is the dealer doesn't typically do a flush but only a drain and fill. If this is what they did, conceivably, your tranny could still have over half of the bad stuff in it. Check with your dealer to see if they actually did a full flush.
