the idea he was telling you about "then run a wire from battery and touch that little nut on solenoid."

will start the car.

The idea here is that of jumping the system. You'll see sparks.

If you somehow managed to leave that wire connected it would keep running the starter and burn it out.

I figure you already figured this out but it seemed like you weren't really positive of what you were talking to about doing.

oh ok. gotcha.

I will check that tonight. been out of town and not able to mess with the car much.

Damn, I just realized how dangerous this is.

Sorry about that, I just realized what you were asking. But that was meant to just be a test to see if the starter is indeed good, and wired properly. Which it should be.

are you sure the battery is fully charged?

Like for instance, can you jump it with a donor car?

-sounds like a bad ground on the alt.

But, Don't connect that wire to the battery.

What you should do, and now what I think you may have been asking; Connect that wire to the starter nut and have it long enough so you can jump it at the battery terminal instead.

The thing about your old alternator, it sounds like a ground wire is no longer connected.
That rough idle and then dying is exactly what happens when your ground goes missing or the bushes are too worn.

So it's possible your old alternator just needs new brushes. (They can be accessed by removing the regulator. The little circular thing with two screws.)

If you didn't touch anything on the starter while all this was taking place. then there should be no possibility of improper wiring. but if you did. the yellow wire goes to the top blade. the big red wire goes to the +terminal side of the battery.

My opinion is to recheck the connections on the alternator.

With a fully charged battery and everything disconnected from the alternator, you should be able to start the car, and if so ,you run it until the battery runs dead.

IT'S ALIVE!!!!

OK, couple things were wrong. the wire to the starter solenoid fell off and I put a new end on it and re-attached that...AND the check valve on my Fuel Pressure Regulator was on BACKWARDS!...DOH!..so the throttle body was starving for fuel and it wouldn't stay cranked. Now it runs like a CHAMP!

I installed new plugs, and I also threw in a new main fuel pump just for peace of mind. cost me $89 bucks at O'Reillys.

At least now I can get out and drive the thing. been sitting for the last 4 months trying to figure it out.
