2009 XC70 Bent Crossmember/Subframe/Engine Cradle
2009 XC70 Bent Crossmember/Subframe/Engine Cradle
I recently purchased a 2009 XC70 at auction. It had sustained a side impact that pushed the left side wheel in snapping the steering knuckle where it holds the tie rod. I purchased a new knuckle and started to replace it when I discovered that the subframe is pushed in and up about 3/4 of an inch where the control arm connects. I called a local shop and they quoted me $3,500 just for the labor to replace the subframe. I found a used one for $500. My question is, how difficult is it to replace? Also, should I have a frame shop attempt to bend in back into place?

I'm sure you can get a subframe replacement procedure from Volvo but no one will advise you on straightening a subframe, unless you are a professional collision shop. Frame straightening isn't uncommon in the business, but I know nothing about sub components.

That shop is VERY high on that repair.
Call a body shop and get a price. That is a rare repair for a mechanical shop but a common repair from a wreck performed by a body shop.

It shouldn't be too expensive to replace the subframe, but it does take a couple of hours, given the steering rack also must be disconnected and the engine supported. I'd say around $5-$700 should be a fair price and indeed a body shop is the best place to do it.
