The flap inside the box seems stuck. The motor and control unit (the knob) are working, and correctly so, but the spindle is shredded (now workable), but won't turn more than, say, 10 degrees, when it should rotate a total of about 90. I suspect inside the box issues.

How do I gain access to inside the heat distribution box to see why the flap is stuck and rectify?

If the shaft itself is broken back inside the unit then you have a big job ahead of you. The only way I know of to replace the the damper is to pull the dash and remove the climate unit.

If, on the other hand, the socket on the end of the shaft is split then it can be repaired. There have been a variety of methods used that range from a short piece of fuel line and a couple of hose clamps to a cut .45 caliber (I think) pistol shell casing.

.40 Caliber casing fits perfect. I repaired one of mine. I cut the spent casing with a copper pipe cutter. Will deform the casing a bit... I worked it back into shape by sliding it over a set of needle nose pliers.
