Transmission, ABS, or something else? (2004 V70)

Post by davidhperry »

Car is an '04 V70 with 130K miles. I drove the car last week from Nashville to Ft. Lauderdale (850 miles) with zero problems. Car has clean oil and has been well maintained, with no warning messages/indicators turned on until it started acting up today.

About 5-10 minutes into my drive to lunch, the car starts taking off really slow from red lights, like it's in 'limp mode.' I checked and the 'winter mode' button hadn't been pushed. I drive it extra easy, but it threw 'transmission system service required' message. A few minutes later, it gives me a brake failure message, ABS and Brake light indicators turn on, and most of the instrument cluster stops working. Interestingly, the water temp, speedo, tach, and trip odometer stop working, while the rest of the gauges/displays function properly.

Here's what it looked like (the engine is running and I'm doing 20-30 mph at this point):

At this point, I'm close to my destination so I park and eat. I figure the car can rest, and I can fuel for whatever I have in store for me. An hour and a half later, I start the car and see that the gauges are back, but it's now thrown an 'engine system service required' message. I'm a few blocks from Advanced Auto Parts, so I went over there to get the battery checked and codes read. Battery and charging system are fine, and the OBD tool reported a PO600 (or P0600?), which is a general communication error, if I'm not mistaken. I reset the code and drove it 20 minutes home, and it appeared to drive normally.

I didn't have good light by the time I got home, but I'm going to check the trans fluid in the morning. If fluid isn't the problem, I don't know what is. I was going to take it up to Orlando on Sunday, but now I'm not sure that's a good idea. It was too late in the day to take it to a shop/dealer, but I did call around to several volvo techs to try and make sense of it. Opinions ranged from battery/alternator, ABS module, faulty transmission, CEM, PNP switch, or something else entirely.

I'm going to take it to someone on Monday to get it checked out, but I was wondering if this kind of thing sounded familiar to anyone, or if anyone has ideas on how to start diagnosing the issue.

I'm going through the same thing on my wife's '04' V70R. I tried to reset any faults by disconnecting the battery a couple of times but this didn't cure any issues.....actually more issues cropped up that may not have been associated with the "Brake failure stop safely" and dead gauge issue. I started it 3 times after the disconnection/connection of the battery cables, but it ran for 30 seconds the first time, 20 seconds the second time and 10 seconds the third time. The 4th time, it didn't start (like it wasn't getting fuel to the fuel rail). I took it to a local shop where the mechanic said he checked the codes and the data link was ok but it seemed like the ECU lost the program and he had no way to reflash the ECU or access to the programs to do this. I currently have it at home. I put a full charge on the battery, removed the BCM (brake control module since many of the things I've read say that the original issue I had and you are having lead back to a bad BCM/ABS module) and was ready to get it repaired when I contacted mattymoo on this site and he said I may have other things going on at this point beyond a possible BCM issue. I put it back together and made sure the fuses were in the correct spots and cranked it over again (no start, same issues, no change). I called another shop that works on a lot of Volvos and they said to have it brought in and they'll check it out. Now the thing holding me up is that I cannot get it to come out of park even though the key is in run position and the shifter physically moves out of the park position. If you got your car running please post what the fix was. If I find anything out, I'll do my best to pass on the info also. Thanks.

You need to read Volvo-specific code using DiCE+VIDA setup. It may highlight which module failed exactly (like CEM).

Our '04 XC70 had similar failure messages. Independent Volvo mechanic reset codes and advised to watch for which code error message occurred first. All messages seemed to happen together. Researched similar failures. Sent CEM to XeMODeX and about $600. No issues in last 10000 miles. '04 P2 Volvos have CEM overheating potential with operational failure.

i had a similar issue on my 04 S60. (no cruise control, tach, trip computers and ABS light). Thought it was the instrument cluster issue documented here and elsewhere, but in my case it turned out to be the BCM module. Bought a used one (Same part number) and problem solved.

I also have the same issue than you had "quietcoolone". I have a 2004 S60 2.5T with 141k. You mentioned that you replace the BCM module for a used one, I did the same, but did not do anything different in my car. I still having the same problems with the used one I bough (no cruise control, tach, trip computers and ABS light). I did not do any software update or reprograming, just replace parts.
The question is:
Do you have to reprogram the BCM in order to start working in my car, or I just plug and play?
What exactly happens after you replace the BCM for a used one, without any software update and programming?

Thanks.

This is what my wife's 2004 XC70 is going through presently. The cluster message board was displaying "Reduced Engine Performance " message with red warning triangle. I already knew I had an issue with "brake switch A", it's the "Brake Pedal Position Sensor " that is located on the brake booster unit. Unfortunately the replacement (Pro Parts Sweden) didn't last too long, about 2 years since I installed. So I ordered a new Brake Pedal Position Sensor from FCPEURO.COM, the sensor is made by "ATE", this the original sensor from the factory. I had the same issue with my 2000 Volvo V70XC P80 chassis and would actually the rear diff would bang into gear when downshifting in parking lots mostly. The issue with the ABS system was causing an issue with the TCU, obviously these systems work in conjunction and the ABS system malfunction is causing communication errors
