Can you post a part number? A pre-formed hose is definitely the way to go for low-cost, worry free breather hose, we should collect up some of the part numbers that work well.
Yes, the two numbers on the hose are E87721 in big type and L-4358 in smaller type below the other number. Those are the only identifying marks on the hose (no manufacturer).

Its not quite a perfect match but its very close. The original part has a rubber bend of about 135 degrees on the drivers side end. On the part I pieced together the angle is a few degrees off but you can easily make up for it with the flexibility of the long part of the hose. I haven't installed it so I haven't called it successful yet...its a close match laying in the workbench though. It ended up costing about $15..about $10 for the hose and about $5 for the splice and clamps.

Questions for today...

1) The new little short hose that goes from the back of the oil trap to the engine block has a steel sleeve around it. The last person who wrenched on my car removed the steel sleeve and put two narrow clamps on the rubber part instead. How he tightened the last clamp is a mystery to me since it seems it would be really hard to access and see. The clamps had torx screws in them so i'm guessing that this was done at the dealership. So, my question is does the sleeved part not work well enough to get a good seal?

2) I usually look at the parts coming off to figure out the orientation of the new ones going on. The same little short hose (part no. 8653339) has two ends (the ends are a little different). It looks like it will work either direction, but does anyone know how the part is meant to be installed? I'm guessing the end with the rubber ring goes against the engine block since it would seal against that. installed the other way that rubber ring is sticking out into nowhere.

Here is a picture of the hose. You get the 90 degree bend out of one end and the little whoop-d-do in the other end has your 135 +/- degree bend. The hose isn't quite straight so you end up with a piece that has a shallow arch which really doesn't matter.

I mentioned it last week in this very thread but to reiterate, another thread from last month has pictures of Gates 28469 in action, and of the different oil trap elbows:

So today I finished up and everything works. The area on the drivers side is a little tight for heater hose, but I was able to make it work. Its not ideal since the heater hose ends up rubbing against something but it will probably work for a long time.

I had only one problem other than the dealership selling me the wrong part and adding a wasted day (Sunday) to my project. I took the steel bracket off of the manifold instead of removing the fastener on the engine block. When I had to replace the fastener that goes into the manifold it never got very tight. I installed it by hand until it stopped turning ....lots and lots of turns ... at least ten, so I know it wasn't cross threaded. I used a stubby ratchet after that so I'm pretty sure I didn't over torque it. That would be hard to do with a 3 inch lever arm. I've been wrenching on cars for 30 years and I know when a fastener is tight.

I suspect that when I put the bracket back on the engine block i didn't get it high enough (I used the old stains as a guide) and was cinching the bracket up toward the manifold with each turn of the wrench. (I loosened the fastener to the block so it could slip). After a while I decided that I should stop since it should have been tight by then and I didn't want to strip the threads. I'll take a closer look at it next Saturday since I had to have the car back working by tomorrow (I spent an hour working in the dark with a floodlight). Anyhow, I think it would have been much easier if i had left the bracket on the manifold .... lesson learned. Unfortunately if its a DIY you learn your lesson on the one time you do it.

While I was at it I replaced the cam seal on the drivers side behind the distributor cap since that one had been seeping, cleaned the throttle body which was filthy and upgraded the dipstick and tube to the latest and greatest. Nice to have the correct dipstick. The old one broke and the only one i could get on short notice was the wrong part ... it worked but I had to add about 1/2 an inch to full line ... OK for me but always a screw up any time anyone else did an oil change for me.

FYI,

Dipstick from Volvo 850 fits S70 perfectly, no need to upgrade it. I posted info in forum.

Yes, thanks, I read that. I opted for the new one. I realize that your solution is cheaper. I have never liked the old stick ... too difficult to read for me. I don't have great up close eyesight and the extra 30 bucks was worth it for me.

I am concerned/cautious about doing this. Any tips on preventing this from happening? Having a hard time understanding this
