Hello everyone. My check engine light came on and I had a Volvo specific reading done on it. They told me it was the hose that runs under the manifold and that it is a very expensive fix because the manifold would have to be removed. He told me it could be rerun over the manifold. Any thoughts?

Chances are it is the line from the intake snorkel to the nipple on the end of the intake manifold. It is part of the PCV system. Sometimes it is just the elbow that pops off of the end of the intake manifold but many more times it is indicative that the rest of the PCV system is due for service as well. A new line can be run but that may not be the best course of action.

Removing the intake manifold is not that big of a deal but if it does come off then it is money well spent to go ahead and service the entire PCV system while you are at it. Left unserviced a clogged PCV can blow the rear main seal which typically costs well over $1000.00 to replace since the transmission needs to be removed to get to it.

I broke the same line three weeks ago on my '97 855 GLT at ~177K miles while I was replacing my heater hoses. As Ozark Lee said, it is one of the lines in the PCV system. It runs from the PTC near the turbo to the intake manifold near the power steering pump. I snapped part of the hard black line near the heater hoses. The hose was very brittle and snapped when I put a little sideways force on it.
Since I was in the middle of the heater hose job, I opted to run a new line from the PTC over to the intake manifold. I used some sections of silicone tubing to make the connections at the PTC and intake manifold and some rubber tubing to make the long run from PTC, past the battery and along the radiator and then over to the intake manifold.
This temporary repair seems to be holding up so far. I've got a full PCV system replacement on my list of things to do, but for now my improvised 'fix' seems to be OK.
Good luck!

Thank you so much, I will pass this on to my mechanic. What exactly is the "vacuum" for anyway?

Is there a particular name for the hose that runs under the manifold? I am ordering an oil trap and want to replace what ever else is relevant to it. I am not working on it, I am just ordering my parts. Thanks for any information you can give.

For your 97 base model (prices are from FCP but you can possibly find them cheaper elsewhere, it was just easy for me to paste it in this way):

1 PCV Oil Trap VOL-9146756 $33.99

the trap does not need to be Volvo branded, but all of these hoses below you must buy Volvo branded, the aftermarket ones are almost all crap:

1 Crankcase Vent Hose VOL-9146757 $36.99
1 Crankcase Vent Hose VOL-9125598 $55.99
1 Crankcase Vent Hose VOL-8653339 $10.99
1 Crankcase Vent Hose VOL-1271771 $9.99

You will also need several clamps but the mechanic will have those. The long hose that runs under the manifold is part of part number 9125598 (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... vo-9125598 or http://www.tascaparts.com/oe-volvo/9125 ... tr=9125598).

You will also need an intake manifold gasket, the Volvo part number is 9146266 but this does not have to be Volvo branded.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help. I try to always get OEM parts if I can. Do you know approximately how many hours it would take to do this job? I just want to make sure I don't get taken advantage of. Thank you.

PCV job at indy is about 3-4h labor charge.

If you look at the link I posted above...
- The oil trap can be re-used.
- The hose that runs under the manifold, don't waste $45 on it, I did and regretted.
Instead, I used heater hose at $1/foot.

That thread has all the info you (and your mechanic) need.
Most mechanics don't have time to read that thread, so they simply order parts from dealer to keep their life simple.

Cobbling together a homemade kit is a great alternative but it is not for everyone, and a mechanic may even refuse to put a homemade kit on a customer's car anyway, which is perfectly reasonable. If you buy the Volvo parts they are going to work and work well, the issue cn90 brings up is strictly about cost.

If you want to save some money on that most expensive hose by installing a homemade alternative, I don't recommend cheap, straight heater hose, rather spend about $15 and get something that fits well. By far the best option for a rubber hose is a pre-formed hose like Gates 28469. You will also need three feet of rubber, 5/16 vacuum line. That updated method has been used by several people now, for example you can check it out here https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 1&start=35 and here https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 7&start=28
