2001 s60 replace worn out T5 with 2.4T?

Post by rohran »

I've got a T5 with 220k on it. I want to replace it with a 2.4T that I picked up that has only 25k on it. Will this work?

probably not, I had done this once and after the transmission would not engage, maybe I did something wrong but was told later in life that t5 and other engines have different trannys that's why it didn't work for me but was able to get the engine running fine just couldn't drive it so ended up auctioning the car

Some Volvo dealer techs I know have done that swap and LOVED it. The only issue was the higher comp ratio 2.4T engine wants premium fuel when it run with T5 boost pressure, timing, and fuel rates.
The engine gains a bit of torque and HP over the 2.3L it replaces. Is durability and longevity affected? Probably if you drive the poop out of it all the time.

The T5 and 2.4T use the same part number transmission if it is vehicles using the same torque converter and final drive ratio so the issue with trans after engine swap was not due to the engine you used.

I'm planning to swap everything.... engine, tranny, struts, axles, rack and pinion, and spindles.... everything except the calipers. I will end up running the 2.4T engine with the T5 electronics. I always run premium, so that may not be a problem. My only concern is if possibly the engine harnesses are incompatible.

As I remember all the harnesses is the same if you are using engine with years close to yours if 2004+ then there might be few different plugs
