Upper engine mount '99 V70

Post by mjthomas »

I replaced my upper engine mount/housing on my '99 V70 and I have two questions.

1. There are five holes in the metal housing, four for the engine mount bolts, and one for the ground. My replacement part was not machined to accept a screw for the ground. Rather, it is smooth inside the hole, instead of threaded. I carefully threaded my original screw in the ground hole anyway. Is that a mistake?

2. When I finished tightening the nut and bolt that goes into the bushing, the nut didn't fit exactly where the old marking was on the arm that holds the bushing. Am I paranoid, or is this ok?

Thanks!

I'm not sure...I know the design was changed from '98 to '99. A lot of Volvo parts are interchangeable and so holes are partially drilled, etc. for your model makes sense to me. You sure you used the right one? I guess a picture of what you're dealing with would speak more than 1000 words. Design was changed so that could be the reason for the lack of a screw hole too and one screw less if there are several more shouldn't make such a difference (make sure the mount is secure and doesn't move).
The old type is pictured above with the new one pictured below: Image

Don't let the blue poly-mounts in the pictures throw you- we're concerned with the metal part that holds it.

I hope I haven't totally confused you.

Thank you for your response. I ordered the part from Volvo and used my vin for specification. I tried initially to post a picture and I will try again. Again, thanImagek you for your response.

Now that I see you have the newer bracket, that's good. As for the hole, these bracket are for different Volvo's. Some don't use that hole. I think a Volvo mechanic would have done the same thing....don't be paranoid. As long as it's solid on the car it's fine.

About your second issue..see if the rubber bushing will turn some...The hole is not perfectly in the center...it's suppose to be this way- but if you get the long bolt through it and tightened up, it should be fine.

The first picture relates to question #1/ The second hole from the left it was I used to screw my ground into.

The second picture relates to question #2/ You'll notice the markings the nut left when I took the original mount off and where the new nut does not match the original location. Again, am I paranoid?

Thank you.

Thank you for your help and quick response! I will see if it will turn and I will no longer feel paranoid.

Greatly appreciated.

Issue #1...Were you actually able to get your ground in the location you mentioned? If so, then fine. If not, then move the ground to under the far left bolt. Issue #2...When I said "turning" I meant the rubber bushing but they have put nice little arrows on it and the bracket and these line up to where they're suppose to line up. I see what you mean by the original markings on the bracket that actually attaches to the engine. I would say that these markings are here because the old one was worn out and allowed things to move. If you're really paranoid, see if you can push the engine down so that everything lines up better and then tighten down the bolt. If not, just cinch down the locking nut enough to keep things from moving. This is nothing to be paranoid about. This setup, I'm sure is much better than the broken one you replaced.

Could the movement of the bolt be related to the engine having moved back do to a failing lower engine mount

Possibly.
If the lower mount is really bad the engine will actually be tilting down
(sideways)
