OK, I do NOT have the SC-816, i have an SC-811. Unfortunately, this means that my bulbs are ALL soldered in place. I am going to try and experiment with both incandescent and LED bulbs from radio shack and post a fix here, but it may take some time. If anyone already has found the RIGHT bulbs for this model, please let me know ASAP before I butcher my PCB...

ALSO, regarding the DISPLAY bulb, I dont know about the 816, but on the 811, there is ONE LARGE bulb behind the right side of the LCD on the PCB. Again, since both the LCD and the bulb are soldered on (even the metal retainer ring around the LCD is held in place by bent tabs that are then soldered to blank spots on the board!), its a pain to replace the bulb. If that ever goes, I may just buy an 816 from ebay or a junkyard...

I know that JRL had some Volvo radios for sale (maybe even a 811)...a radio without the CD. If I recall, he wasn't asking much for these at all....might be worth it to you to buy one from him rather than go to all of the trouble to replace these bulbs.

I have a SC-710 unit for an 850 if anyone needs one. Just PM me with an offer. It's pretty much like the SC-811 - AM/FM radio, cassette deck, option to connect an Alpine M-Bus or stock CD changer to it. The radio code and the factory cards that have the code on it will be included.

All the bulbs for it are working and the bulbs are easily replaced with the radio shack or Honda ones. The bulbs are not soldered on and the only hassle is swapping in the new bulbs into the bases that screw into the radio's PCB.

Thanks for the GREAT information. I did this yesterday, and it was pretty painless...hardest part was seeing those tiny wires!

My only issue is the bulb bases: I'm guessing because of the heat over the years, they are brittle. One of them broke such that it cannot be twisted back into the slot and stay tight.

Does anyone know where those bases may be purchased? Thanks for any help you may have.

There is actually a Volvo part number for the base and lamp, which I accidentally ran across. Volvo part # is 9148908. They can be found on-line for about $2.00 each, or at the dealer for about $5.00. :D

I just bought a 99 V70 with 85K, had it painted and it's beautiful. I've had Volvos since 75 but this is my first non-240. I've done most of the regular service to my 240s, but I look at the V70 and it scares the dickens out of me. I couldn't even find the spark plugs without a map. I feel lucky running across this site. Already, I'm finding commonalitites - squeaky dashboard, radio lights out, how to change the oil. Thanks already. Now my questions - #1. recommendations for a Service Manual. I bought a Vadis CD through eBay and got burned. Should I try again? Does Chilton make a manual for a 99 V70? I've only seen them to 98. #2. The radio speaker grill on the passengers door is broken. Is removal as easy as popping it out? And, finding a used one was hopeless-so I am going to have to pay $42 at the dealer. #3. I need to replace my radio illumination bulbs. Where is the radio model number? Any update to the type of bulbs needed for the radio (still the Honda)? #4. When I openned the rear door on a rainy day, water poured on my back seat. It appears to be a design issue but my wife wants to blame the paint shop. Is this indeed a common problem? Whew! Done. Thanks.

Happy New Year and welcome to MVS!

I hope I can help you, but others will hopefully chime in. Let me suggest that since you jumped onto a radio bulb thread, that in the future (or depending on how the responses go) you re-post each of your issues as new posts in this section.

Ok,,,now to try to answer your questions:

#1...I would say try VADIS again. Sorry you got burned....how so? I have a copy of VADIS and it's really the only thing I could say that's decent for the money for '99 and later. Although the 850 and V70 have common issues and parts, etc. The free downloadable 850 manual in the pinned section of this forum will be helpful for some items.
#2...I would say you'll either have to find one at a good bone yard or bite the bullet at the dealer. Seems that mine (S70, '98) is integrated into the panel itself so to change it out would mean to change the panel. What about yours?
#3...Radio illumination bulbs are the Honda bulbs or modified Radio Shack bulbs or for more $ at the dealer (I believe that www.ipdusa.com also sells them). The Radio number is in small letters on the outer face.
#4...The leaking door jam is not a flaw typical of these cars...I'd say the paint place left something out or didn't get things aligned properly while doing the painting. It's something I've never heard of on these cars.

Thanks for the reponse and advice Matt - this is my very first foray into any forum-type setting so my manners may be lacking because I'm uniformed. I appreciate the patience.
In response
#1. My Vadis won't install completely (Installer Update?)and since my purchase (Dec)the seller is no longer listed so I have no technical support or recourse. So I figured it was a lemon to begin with and I got burned. However, I just saw something about setting the "date" back. Maybe I'll try that.
#3 Bulbs - do you know the modified radio Shack bulb numbers? Are they as good? My nearest Honda dealership is 45 min. away and Radio Shack is about 10 min.
#4 The leak. Can you direct me to a picture of what the seals should look like (open and closed door). From what I see on my car seals, it appears that if water is to drip off the top of the car, there is nothing to stop it.
Thanks again.

#1...yes, try resetting the date. My latest version doesn't need this but an earlier copy I had certainly did.
#3 I would go with this: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/volvo_ ... cement.php
easier than the radio shack bulbs. If you look in the above thread, there is a place on line you can order from. That's what I did.
#4 The piece called the "strip retainer" above your back door is either missing or damaged (sounds missing from what you've said). Look at the other side to see if you can tell a difference. Part numbers are: Left side- 3509617, Right side- 3509618

Any more posts other than about the light bulbs, please start a new thread.

Regards,
MIJ

Can anyone help me with my dashboard lights? Specifically the lights on the Climate Control are mostly out and I'd like to replace the bulbs. The dealer wants $130 for labor plus parts. I'm sure that the parts are just a couple of dollars. So what's involved in replacing them?

Thanks.
