That's exactly what I'm dealing with. If the PTC is clear, is it safe to conclude that the rest of the PCV system is clear? (I'd rather not have to replace all the PCV components unless I need to.). And to echo xHeart's question, any reason for concern if the electrical connection is covered in oil?
(First post, by the way. Glad to be here and thanks to all for the helpful info. Picked up a '99 v70 XC with 130k miles for $1400, and it ran great for two days until the ETM failed.now doing some "while I'm in there" maintenance.)

I have not returned to looking up after the cleanup.
Why PCV accumulates fluid vapors at this location is not clear to me? Should this vapor go some where else?
I have a clean, and all new Volvo PCV on 97-850 NA for a year now. It was close to a complete clog, but the flame trap was clear. Is there a lesson?
It is V70XC, hence I would look closely at the rear/exhaust cam seal if the fluid is still collecting at the bottom of turbo.
Justin and Mike say to use CRC on sensor, but gently not a forced spray, wet with a fabric.

Question: What happens if I drive my 850r wagon without the pcv system attached to the ptc nipple?
I was 99% of the way done changing my entire pcv with a kit in a cold Alaskan parking lot and then I happened upon the ptc nipple and remembered someone mentioned it needs to be thoroughly cleaned which this one did. Cleaned and shiny I got it back onto the intake pipe but while attaching the narrow elbow vacuum hose the thin narrow tube on the nipple broke of. I also cant get the other pcv hose attached to the top for the life of me. I am thinking about working on a fix or ordering a new intake hose for 100$ although if I could find just the ptc nipple for cheaper that would be wonderful. Is it ok to drive around till I get this all attached?

I'm in the middle of a PCV replace job on my newly acquired 1997 850 GLT. While pulling off the rigid pipe the PTC nipple came out of the intake pipe. Knowing this is part of the bigger picture for PCV functionality, I decided to clean up the nipple. The whole area was pretty dirty so I cleaned off everything I could while in place. Now the problem is the effort is takes to get the nipple back into the pipe. Any good suggestions out there??? ... was thinking of a little silicone grease to lube it up! Any thoughts? This job is much bigger than I expected....

Yes the grease helps, be patient you will get it back on. It takes a few triestmillard wrote:I'm in the middle of a PCV replace job on my newly acquired 1997 850 GLT. If the rigid pipe is still out of the car, just get a small screwdriver and push in around the edges of the rubber base of the PTC. It will go right into the pipe.

Thanks for the excellent write up. The PCV system was done 9 months and 10000 miles ago on my 95 850, but still had pressure and dipstick smoke. I cleaned out the PTC and replaced the rubber seat (Volvo part 3507985, available from dealer) and now it's back to normal. I'd definitely recommend cleaning the PTC before doing a whole PCV job. It definitely saved me a lot of time, money, and trouble.

For those who are cleaning out their PTC valves, I wanted to share my 'teardown' on an old PTC that I did a couple weeks ago. I sliced it open and you can see how it's put together, including how the small inlet vacuum port aligns with the copper wall of the main body of the PTC:

1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94
Thanks for the write-up and info, cleaned mine out about two weeks ago.
That turbo inlet clamp was a PITA! I bought a replacement at hardware store because it was difficult removing. When I took it out it was rusted or something and I sprayed some liquid wrench which made it work fine.
Took pic after I poked a hole through the blockage. The vac lines were clear, and hoses were fine. I replaced the clamp at nipple with a regular clamp from hardware store and it's holding up fine.
Going toreplace PVC parts in coming weeks, still getting dipstick smoke and positive pressure out of cap.
Forgot to snap picture after cleaning
