1998 V70, Possible starter motor problem?

My V70 wagon just started making this horrible metal on metal rattle, squeeling, whirring noise. It clearly sounds like it is coming from the driver's side of the engine (opposite side of the belts, alternator, etc.).
One of my neighbors suggested it might be the starter motor engaging but not disengaging. Sounds plausible but I thought I'd bounce this idea of you experts and see if you have any ideas on how to verify this theory.

One other thing... I took the oil cap off to see if the noise was coming from inside and it didn't sound any louder implying it was from another area.

I'm hessitant to drive it given the terrible sound coming from the car although I did drive it for a few minutes after I heard the sound and it drove fine.

Any help or ideas is greatly appreciate.

I don't think it's the starter motor. Sounds like it could be the air pump motor for the emissions system. The air pump motor is located under the battery. Does the noise start about 20 seconds after the car it started first thing in the morning and stop after about 2-3 minutes.

It is particularly loud when the car first starts up and continues. I've left the car on for a couple of minutes and it doesn't go away.
