1998 v70 Hood Rubber Bumpers Not Found

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

Sounds like a Windows file error or something right? I wish it was :-)

I have had some problems with the opening of the hood, which i read now is fairly common in these cars. When i inspect the mechanism, i can see why. The hood opening system was not exactly designed very well.

But the strange thing is when i read about this problem in different places, they always mention something about "rubber bumpers" that supposedly limit the hood travel as it comes down to engage in the latch mechanisms which are arranged as one on each side of the engine compartment.
When i look for these things, i dont find them anywhere. It seems like they would give the hood a little extra upward force when the hood release lever is pulled, and that would be just enough to pop the hood open in most cases, even if not under all temperature conditions.

Can someone show me where these hood 'bumpers' are supposed to be located under the hood? I dont even see any brackets for mounting them. I have seen some replacement rubber bumpers on the web for sale, and they look like a small cylinder of black rubber which looks kinda like a spring thing.
If i could get a drawing of these things and their location and possibly if there are brackets for them, i might be able to rig something up myself to replace them and that way at least i would be able to open the hood without having to pull up on the hood, pull the release, then pull on the hood again, then pull on the release again, etc., which is a pain especially since i am checking things on a daily basis since i just got the vehicle a few weeks ago.

Thanks in advance, and be sure that i will always pass along any information i obtain to other owners too if they need help in the same area.

You can see them in this picture. This is an 850 that was in the middle of a clutch job but I think the bumpers are in the same place on a 70 series. I went through my 70 series pictures and I don't have any that really show them.

They are on the underside of the hood roughly just above the edges of the radiator. If you look on the black plastic radiator shroud you will probably see square shadows in the plastic where they land when the hood is closed.

I put a fender washer (or several stacked) on top of the shroud and attached it with a self locking nut and a pan head bolt through the plastic and made an elevated landing pad for the bumper. A fender washer is relatively thin, fairly large in diameter and has a small hole in the center.

Over the years the bumpers shrink and the landing pad fixes that. You can use all stainless steel hardware and it will still be less than $5.00. Or you can buy new bumpers. New bumpers cost more.

If you do it just make sure to be careful that you don't drill into anything you can't see.

Hi again,

Ozark Lee:
Wow, you have a lot of Volvos there.
After reading the next reply after yours it looks like the bumpers may be different on the v70. That's the actual car i am working with. Thanks for that information too though.

98v70dad:
Oh ok, that makes sense now. I think i saw the 'landing' areas that you describe here. I didnt think to look up at the area under the hood itself yet so i didnt see them, as i was looking mostly in the engine compartment.
I also saw that on mine the top plastic over the radiator might be cracked too so that would mean the rubber bumper on that side would go lower than usual and that could explain the whole problem. I'll be taking another look later today.
Thanks much for this info because now i know where to look exactly.

I posted info on how to adjust the side latches x2, which are a tad too high.
Use a 10-mm socket and adjust the latches down a tiny bit.
Mark with Sharpie the existing relationship btw the latch and the body work and slide it down 1-2mm or so.
Trial and error.

Hi,

Ok thanks, i'll have to try that.

I was also thinking of doing a little re-engineering :-)

But hey, while i was looking at it yesterday i couldnt help think about what we would do if the hood cable broke. Is there a way to open the hood if the cable breaks and you cant get to the broken end you need to pull on? I'd like to be prepared just in case.
I also looked up the gas door emergency opening, which they say to go into the side panel just inside the back door to access the door release.

So any way to open the hood without pulling on the normal hood release ?

My hood cable broke at 145K, luckily there is a bit left inside the cabin to be grabbed with a pair of pliers.
I wrote a DIY hood cable somewhere in forum. If I were you, I'd just replace the hood cable as preventive approach, it is ~ $37 at the dealer.

Look at the area on underside of hood where the latch piece is mounted to the hood. Cracking in that area will also make the hood not pop up and unlatch when cable is pulled.

Hi,

Thanks for the new ideas.

I will look for a new cable, but i also noticed that there is a second cable going from one side of the car to the other. That actuates the passenger side hood latch mechanism.

I was hoping to find a way to get the hood open in the event of total failure to open it any normal way such as pulling on the cable. That way if the cable breaks inside the engine compartment i might still get it open, even if it is not that easy to do.
Maybe there is some trick to it, without having to break anything?

The "cross cable" (cable connecting R and L sides) rarely goes bad.
