1998 v70 Service Light Reset 'Tool' ?

Post by MrAl »

Hello,

First, does anyone know how to get one of these things cheaper than about $170 USD ?

If not, can anyone get information on the protocol that Volvo uses for communicating with the device (such as the computer) that resets the service light? If so, i will gladly design a reset tool and save 150 dollars for something i really should be buying at a reasonable cost.
I would need the complete protocol, such as any handshaking, etc. My first guess is that the tool uses a simple microcontroller that sends a series of bytes to the computer and that turns the service light off. Microcontrollers today cost between $1 and $5 USD for most types, even more advanced type units. Since that would be 99 percent of the 'tool', the cost should be very low to build one.
But i would need complete information about the communication between the tool and computer.

I would also be willing to hand the finished, tested design to others if they wanted to build one too, or even get someone to build a bunch of them and sell them for $10 USD or something like that to anyone here who wants one.

Thank you :-)

That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Just take the light bulb out of the cluster. Problem solved. It takes 45 minutes the first time, and about 20 minutes any time after that. Probably far less time than it will take to design a switch to turn it off.

I used the bulb removal method as well, but I did it when I had to remove the cluster to replace some burnt out bulbs in the remainder of the cluster.

Hello again,

Oh ok, thank you. I must have missed that or forgot as i have been stretching out thin lately with various tasks at home to complete.

I will look for that tool and see if i can find it.

I would take the light out too but i had to mess up the cluster.

Thanks again.

Oh and thanks for the heads up on the SRS light in the other thread too.

Hello again,

Ok i checked out the FCR tool and that is not a stand alone tool but requires a PC with a serial port to work it, also with a software download.

I currently do not have a Laptop only a desktop and tablet computers. I would have to pack up my whole PC (box, monitor, keyboard, etc.) and take it outside with me. Im not sure that is a good idea.

It looks like a very interesting tool however. What else can it do?

Any other ideas?

Well I guess you could buy the Vol-FCR and hook it up to your computer and then measure the generated signal when sending the "clear service" light command. You may need to power certain pins of the OBDII plug with 12V.

By the way the cracked or demo version of the software won't reset the SRS light. The full version is required.

It have access to every single module in the car including service light reset. If you have motronic 4.4 engine management...you can read engine codes with it.With newer version you will have live data.

@ precopster ...i have cracked version and it reads and clears srs light just fine.Lee have it too and it works with srs light also.

Hi,

Mike:
Thanks Mike, i was downloading the 'demo' version, but i have serious doubts if i will get the unit anytime soon as i have other things to purchase right now for the car. Maybe in the future though.
Yes, that would tell me the signals that were being sent. Would be nice to be able to get a copy of the protocol though, as that would be simpler to work with and faster for me to develop a new tool just for the service light. Lucky this isnt a super important issue, just one that i would like to address properly at some point anyway.

Misha:
Well you mention the SRS again, but Mike was talking about the 'Service" light, and that's what i was talking about too now. Will your software setup clear the 'service' light or not?
It still sounds very interesting even if it doesnt, but would be nice if it did. I would probably start with the 'demo' version.
How much does the 'full' version cost?
