1998 s70 p0563 System voltage high

Post by cjbmustang »

The CEL went on while driving, so I checked it when I got back figuring it would be a returning code of bank 1 or 2 too rich. I checked the battery with the car running and it was hovering around 16.28 - 16.30. When the fan kicked on, it dropped down to 15.xx.

The alternator was replaced a few years ago with a replacement from FCP.

Any ideas? I know the battery ground cable disconnected from the lug, which is still bolted to the motor (shame on me), but it's been fine for years.

The car has 303k miles on it if it helps point me (or you) in a certain direction. Is there anyway to test the voltage regulator?

Thanks,

Chris

Re-connect that ground immediately if it's not too late for alternator or battery.
Of course...it could be just voltage regulator which failed, but the detail about ground wire is pointing to bad or no ground.

it's been off for like 5-8 years...doubt it would randomly start causing me problems now. For ha ha's I will ground it. It sounds like the voltage regulator to me...just looking for opinions

With alternator output like you have...you're lucky that your ecu(s) are not frayed.Don't drive a car until you solve charging problem or all of modules in the car will be toast.
I would try with changing voltage regulator first.

Won't the car just go into limp mode?

Only specific codes can put a car into limp mode.

Looking at them they are like $140 and a whole new alternator is like $180. Usually a new voltage regulator is $20-$40.

Are they made from unobtanium?

A good car electrician can rebuild your old voltage regulator.Btw...that is the only part of alternator that can go bad. Most of the time.
