1986 volvo 240: TD-613 radio What kind of bulb to use

Post by mika »

Hello, I have a replacement radio out of a 89 240, its a TD-613 Cassette/Radio Receiver. I opened it up, and there are 2 leds that illuminate the face of the radio (front faceplate does not come off. top metal plate comes off, reveals unit, and 2 leds that are pre wired are in there with blue rubber caps)

Does anyone have any idea what kind of LED to purchase? Can I get away with a "pre wired" smallest size led? (1.5mm? 3.0mm? And wiring it in? Looked on all forums, no mention of this

Just to document my progress, and hopefully for future people reading: This is my course of action:

I have ordered 2 "chip" DC (I hope this is correct) leds from http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com company in Colorado. On ebay or amazon, I could not find any pre wired LEDs in America for a decent price. The led's used in this are 1.8mm I believe. If prewired, all I need to do is splice them in I hope :? .
This is how LEDs are measured

I decided to go with a "chip" LED just incase my 1.8mm estimate was incorrect. The chip ones are TINY, and there is not much room inside the radio. Will update. Shipping from Colorado is a modest 2 dollars with change.

The LED's wired up good, I used a soldering iron and they light up. (if anyone ever reads this in the future, the top 2 leds are accessible when you remove the metal plate off the radio. The problem is, there are more LEDs that illuminate the buttons, and I was not able to get to them. The faceplate does not remove, because I could not get the volume knob off, it is in the way. I will leave the project as it is, and just removed the 2 easily accessible leds)

I am having an issue, speakers do not work after radio is hooked up. would really appreciate anyone's input

StoryI had an aftermarket Kenwood radio in my car, and I wanted to put in the OEM radio I found at the Junkyard. OEM radio was from a 1989 240, but it is not original to that car (had salvage yard marker on it, might be from 90+). The issue I am having is this: I plugged in the OEM radio into the harness using the white connector (Square 9 prong, 3X3). Radio turns on, but speakers do not play. I have left over wires, nowhere to put thempictures below. Something is telling me that there needs to be an amp involved to make speakers work. I cannot figure out where to connect the left over cables. No wiring diagrams mention an amp or these left over cables

This is how the car harness looks right now. (I wrapped the exposed wire) You can see where someone spliced in the aftermarket radio, I removed everything and cleaned it up as much as I could. I posted a previous topic about a power antenna, and you can see where the antenna trigger is in this picture.

Next pictures is of the OEM radio I am trying to get to work. The big white connector is able to connect to the harness, but I am left with the other 3 cables (a brown, a yellow, and a light brw and black wire). No wiring diagrams mention an amp or these left over cables
Do these connect to amp somewhere in the car? Maybe they are tucked away somewhere? b/c kenwood had a built in amp?

Looks like there is no amp in my car, I looked everywhere. I found a diagram from a 93 240 and it looks like those later models had an amp, and the radio I have must be from a later car. So I am trying to run a radio without an amp, no wonder the speakers do not work.

What options do I have now? Retrieve the amp from the JY? Or wire in a separate aftermarket amp?
