The gist of what is being implied in this thread is that if you have 20 spare minutes and a few small zip ties, then you are not going to find a DIY repair much easier than this one. Much easier than doing an oil change.

Yeah, that was my " ouch"

In case you haven't figured it out, Erik likes zip ties.

( he's right, of course. They are much better for this application.)

Steve,

Yes, maybe it would be cool to have a member designation like "Volvo Guru" under some user names. I would vote Erik and a number of others to that title. :)

I'll check again in a week and see if they've moved. AC has worked fine since I added the shims and I couldn't tell when that one came loose. The gap was still close to even all the way around.

The best is to use a thin metal foil - such as aluminum, of the needed thickness. One can cut a 1" long by 1/4" large piece, have it inserted then bend both ends so it doesn't slide away when the compressor will rotate

Has anybody ever welded the inner to the outer areas of the fan clutch together?

Not that I have ever heard of. It falls into the really bad idea category.

Old thread alert.

On welding the AC compressor....

The AC compressor needs to cycle to stop the evap from freezing under cool weather conditions. Welding the clutch would prevent that and probably also wear out the compressor prematurely, too.

A very wise man once suggested zip ties to fix the clutch gap.

I read on Volvospeed that it can be accessed from the passenger wheel well after I remove the plastic covering? Would that be easier? All I got are some jacks and jack stands. No one wants to do it. They will only replace the compressor.

Get some plastic ramps and put the front up, drop the plastic covering under the car and start zip tieing.

You can donate the ramps to some kids for bike jumping when done. Don't forget to take it off your taxes for educational donation

No it wouldn't be easier. Don't overthink this. :) We got a seven page thread here nailing down the best way to to do it--easy fix for a couple of bucks worth of zip ties. You can do this and you will be so happy with the result. Go for it.
