2002 V70 Blown Engine - Fix or Another Volvo?

Post by AndyV70 »

My 2002 V70 2.4T Engine is blown, - bad rod / cracked block, had just ticked over 100K a few days ago. Car was regularly maintained with services / oil changes and new timing belt was done at 90K.

I like the XC70 and AWD would be a plus - just wondering if the newer (2010 plus) cars have gotten more reliable? The older P2's seem to have a lot of issues - Engine Mounts, Front End, Transmissions, PCV system and various electrical.

Are the S60's any different / better?

Also considering a rebuilt engine - have been quoted 3-4K by a good volvo Indy shop.

I had recently replaced most of the front end - struts / cushions, end links, tie rods. Brakes are good, Tires OK, Body / Interior in good shape, no rust.

A better choice would be a 2008-2009. Several were sold with the 2.5T AWD and drove by older persons. As for the engine thing, did it blew all of a sudden? The timing belt parts were from Volvo? I would rather go with a used engine off Ebay ($500) plus another $500 labor. Careful with the transmission, shaking it may dislodge sludge and cause issues. A good 2002 transmission is rare, mark it before the job so the garage doesn't swap it with a bad one.

To qualify Oragex' post, What is your budget? You could repair your car for $1-2k. Is a new car payment acceptable? He nailed it with 2.5T/AWD, you get the refined 5-cyl and Haldex AWD, with the size you are used to.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
