1995 850 engine cranks but won't turn over

Post by Svenska »

I can't figure out why my '95 850 non-turbo won't start. I just replaced the plugs (Volvo-brand) dist. cap & rotor (Bosch) and plug wires (Bosch). I also replaced all the motor mounts/torque rod because they were all collapsed. The fuel pump is working because I'm getting a fuel smell @ the engine bay area each time I try to start it (actually I'm flooding it, I know). I took each plug out and checked for spark which I do have (I placed each plug one-at-a-time on the engine while plugged into the respective wire). I even replaced the camshaft pos. sensor with a used but known good one. The engine just cranks but won't turn over. It ran fine yesterday, nothing out of the ordinary happened. I also pro-actively replaced the ignition coil (Bosch) today since the one in there is 20 years old. Thinking it may be defective, I swapped the old one back in - still nothing. What am I missing?

Try a 1-2 second shot of ether ( starting fluid) into the air cleaner and see if you get some fire

This gives you a clear indicator of spark vs fuel problem.

A compression test is the next step after that.

Just to be on the same page, when a car "cranks", it IS turning over. They are synonyms

and don't totally freak at the thought of compression test, it was running before, right? Lookup "lawnmower syndrome" here and see what is suggested. But spark, fuel, and compression are what a car needs to run.
Another thing to check is to double-check spark plug wire order, one of the manuals has it wrong. Check database for that under basic tune-up. Might check that first, no-cost, simple.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

As said, the Haynes manual has the plug wire locations totally wrong and even the Volvo factory manual has the rotation backwards. If you look carefully on the cap the cylinder associated with each of the ports is molded into the plastic but the numbers are very small.
