Any ideas?

sounds like you have issues with the fuse box.. have a look around there and see if anything is broken or disconnected.

I thought about fuses but there seemed to be too many different fuses involved. And I believe that the headlights aren't fused. The mix of items which don't work all seen to be controlled by the ignition switch so I'm currently leaning that way
i dont mean the fuses itself..but the hook up harness to it and out of it. Sometimes they get cut or loosen or ground.
Ignition key could be a culprit too.

the volvo wiring diagrams are the best that I have ever seen. I think mine cost me $27 and they are worth every penny.

all grounds and their locations are called out in wiring diagrams

Hi, when you have different electrical problems at the same time it is most often a problem with the ground. Check all the ground connection points in your car. I do not know exactly where to find them in your 240. Those can easily be coroded and it is a good idea to check all connections that they are tight and clean. Maybe Volvo has used the same ground bar in your 240 as they used in 740. Then it is a long bar with something like 10 flat connectors for ground cables and the connection bar is screwed to the chassi. The bar often coroded because it is galvanized.
